RE: thoughts on the 280 rem round
Thanks for the feedback guys.... My only negative encountered so far was ammo selection- I was determined to buy some ballistic (SST style) bullets..the only thing I could find were the win silvertips 140gr for $40- Yikes. We cannot utilize rifles in this rea for anything other than yotes/woodchucks- but if that ever changes (or i travel) it is nice to knwo I have a good deer round and maybe good for bigger..
Thanks!
Thanks!

A 7mm 175NP will do anything a 30-06 will do with a 200NP and the 200 NP is a better bullet in an 06 than any 220 i've ever used or tested. You really need a bigger case capacity than the 06 has, to use bullets heavier than 200 grain bullets.
Have you ever looked at the SD of all of these bullets to see why you don't need a heavier bullet than 175 grain in 7mm??
DM
I see no 7mm bullets over 175 grains. The '06 has 180, 200 and 220 factory loads.

Given: 280MV is 2650 maxIMR load, MV of the '06 2688 max IMR load
E @ 300 yards for the 280= 1824; 400 yards=1581 zero at 250 drop=-19.1
E @300 yards for the '06= 2080; 400 yards=1782 zero at 250 drop=-18.9
Now which cross canyon Elk rifle would you chose? These are real numbers from real manufactures data. The defense rests. If you run all the numbers from ME to 400 yards, the '06 is clearly superior. The reason is and will forever be, the 30'06 is more versatile. Now, if you want to compare a Moose load/brown bear load with the 220's, the story gets worse for th 280. Yes it's a terrific deer antelope cartridge as with all the 7mm's, however, when it comes to the big boys......close but no cigar. Regards, Rick.

Hello DM. You called me....I supply emperical evidence. 175gr Nosler partition (the only one Nosler makes in 175gr.) vs 200gr Nosler Accubond. BC of the 7mm is .519....BC of the '06 is .481.

Get off it the 06' is no special performer and does nothing that the 280 rem won't equal. I wouldn'twant either when hunting anything that could eat me, sorry the abilityof .308 diameter bullets really doesn't mean anything to me or many I know. BTW, you don't need a 200 gr 308 bullet or 175gr .284 bullet to hunt elk or moose!! I hunt both regularily and other then my 300wby(which had nothing to do with requirement but accuracy), never saw the need for the heavier for caliber bullets. I currently use a 140gr barnes TSX in my 7mm rem mag and have taken both with single shots. My partner uses a 280 rem and 160gr bullets, same results 1 shot harvests of antelope, deer, elk and moose! Handloaded the 280 is great round that won't leave the owner wanting unless hunting the big bears. The .284 calibers is just as capabable as a .308 IMO ballistical and terminal performance.

RE: thoughts on the 280 rem round
Just got to correct ya on nosler bullets. I have been using the 120 gr ballistic tips in my 7mm08,.284,and.280s for years with awesome results.
Yes,the 30-06 does have heavier bullet options, but as far as deer size game, the .280 will beat the 30-06 with less recoil, flatter trajectory, and with proper bullet/placement,seems to have slightly higher percentage of instant kills. I am stating this based on almost 40 years of hunting experience, and 25+ years as professional gunsmith.

30-06....200 gr. Partition...MV 2650 fps...SD .301... BC .481
280... 175 gr Partition... MV 2800 fps... SD .310... BC .519
(from this point on I will give 06 data first & 280 data second respectively)
Trajectory @ 100 yds +2/+1.8; @200 yds 0/0; @300 -8.7/-7.5; @400 -25.1/-21.7
Energy @100 2708/2626; @200 2342/2459; @300 2016/2054; @400 1726/1788
What I read is that either cartridge is equally capable of taking game out to 300 yds. I think anyone who would argue one is better than the other just doesn't get it. In the real world the differences are so marginal that you could almost consider them identical. The 06 does it with a bit heavier bullet, but SD's are nearly identical. The 280 will do it with a bit less recoil. You decide which suits your needs better. I say that its splitting hairs.

RE: thoughts on the 280 rem round
280 is a really neat round very versitle the 7mm-08 is similar but the 280 will work better for heavier bullets. If you look into any hunting that has been done with the 7x57 (which has hunted every game animal on earth including elephant) it the 7x57 is btween the 7mm08 and 280. so if that is what you want go for it. You my not be able to find ammo for the 280 like you can the 30/30 or 30/06 but that may not be an issue for you.

RE: thoughts on the 280 rem round
I truely love the 280, I will be getting the 50th edition 700 in 280, it's an LSS and not the mountain rifle. Ammo is a sore spot in my life which has made me a handloader. I have a 35 whelen, 300 win mag, that will knock down whatever walks inNorth America, but the 280 is my ideal deer round with a 140 grain Accubond or Sierra gameking.
