RE: pellet gun question....
you might check out some of those subsonic bullets that only fire off the primer...
i'll look them up and post a link

and you can't go wrong with a crosman pumpmaster. far too many small animals to count have met their demise to my trusty ol' 10 pump i've had since i was a kid.

You didn't specify what kind of money you're looking to spend. The Gamos are o.k. for plinking rifles, but aren't even close in quality to the German made guns. Take a look at the RWS or Beeman German (not the cheap Spanish made guns being imported by Beeman) made guns. For not much more money than a Gamo, you'll get a lot better made rifle that you can pass down to your children.

Since you've got a .22, look op CB caps, and Aguilia super-colibris.

I would recommend a .22 cal pellet rifle over a .177 as the .22s (even well under 1000+ fps) deliver a real whallop.
I have an old Chinese Pleasure KS-1 .22 cal air rifle (single-break cocking). I doubt it hits more than 500 fps, but not only drops squirrels easily within backyard range it also adds some hofferfesin to the veggies in the garden with easy head shots.
Paid $5 for it. Will post a pic of it maybe later tonight or tomorrow night.

I have a German made RWS and it really shoots well though it was around $300. You can get them for less but I was making more money at the time than I knew what to do with and it is fun to shoot.
