I shoot Mossbergs. I have one of each,835 and 500. I don't think the 835 kicks all that bad when shooting 3 1/2" shells. The 835 is a little heavier than the 500. That is due to the "overbore". They pretty much chambered a 10g. barrel for 12g. They did this to help the shot patterns. In my opinion it worked. But I'm getting of the point. My father inlaw shoots only Remingtons. We will never agree on what gun is better. My point is that there is no point in the comparison. They are on a par as far as reliability goes. It's just a question of what you like. Shoot them both [ borrow from friends , family; whatever you have to do to try them both]. Decide what you like instead of what other people like. That being said: on a price point,I picked up my 835 for less than a 870 express would cost. Take your time and spend your money wisely. You won't regret buy either gun.
