I can see no reason that the 270 and 300 WSM would ever fall by the way side. There have been thousands already sold and in my area they are out selling all other cartridges. They deliver the sane performance in a much shorter action. Hor me personally, the 308 is all I would ever need. I mean the 308 and the other cartridges based on its casing. The 338 Federal would be the perfect bigger rifle for me. That would just be for Moose and the big bears even though the 308 would probabbly also do it all.

I'd go for the .308 also. Or maybe a 7mm-08. In reference to the .308, why would you need to "handload it up some"? A .308 is good to go on whitetails out to 400 yards or so.

Here's a question. Since the allmighty .300winmag is such a great performer, and there isant a knats ass of difference between it and the .300WSM velocity wise, isant that a pretty good place to be?
It's kind of like comparing the .308 to the .30/06, only with closer ballistics.

RE: best short action round
well im guessing that ill end up getting a browning a-bolt in 308 win, or if i run across a tikka T3 hunter in 338 fed first and have the money in my wallet then it might have to come home with me insted. the 308 will probly do anything that the 25-06 might be considerd "light" for and then some, like elk and bear, and the 25-06 will do anything that the 308win might not have the flatnes and reach for. so with those two rifles i think i should be sitten preaty good for what im lookin to do,.........dont ya'll?

I would go with 308 or 300 WSM, however I am in the process of selling my 308 because I don't shoot it since I got my 300 WSM. I like the caliber so much I bought it in 2 guns. Either will work for what your described uses.
