A 300 Win Mag is fine for deer hunting. Can't kill a deer too dead, however why punish yourself with a 200 grain bullet when a 150 or 165 grain is a better choice for deer?

Yup - Great cartridge, especially if you only have one gun and plan to hunt elk or bear with it - or do some longer range hunting/ shooting. Basically - you'll never have one run off too far. Keep in mind though - that magnums aren't for everyone. Some can shoot them and some not. If the recoil and associated noise doesn't bother you - it will do everything that any common deer round will do and more. Definately stay away from 200gr bullets though. I would shoot 150, 165 or 180s absolute tops. Also - you might opt for a tad heavier gun to soak up some of the energy from the recoil. It's a popular cartride and for general deer hunting many think it's too much. I've never had a deer complain and if you keep your shots in the boiler room, your butcher will be happy too.
Good hunting.

RE: 300. Win. Mag
.300 Win Mag is a good deer gun.
I would be one of the guys who would say it is overkill for deer. It cant do much more than a 30-06 unless you are planning on shooting at 500 to 1,000 yard shots. And because of the recoil most people will shoot a 30-06 more accurately. I would also agree that if you plan on hunting elk or bear it is a good choice. But if you are only going to hunt deer use the 30-06. If you must hunt deer with a .300 Win Mag I would also agree that 150 or 165 gr. bullets are a better choice than 200 gr.

Because you specifically mention deer hunting and not other species as well, In my opinion the 300 Win Mag is not a good choice.
Much more than necessary firepower for deer.
Extra weight.
Extra barrel length.
Extra recoil.
My choice for deer - 7mm.08
My choice for moose - 300 Win Mag
If I could only have one- 30.06
gg.
