Personally, I like a peep sight on the 30-30 lever guns. Although there is no magnification as there is with a scope, they are extremely quick to use. Simply put the front bead on the target and shoot.

You would be best suited to go with a Marlin 336 and mount a 1.5x6 or 2x7 power scope with low scope rings, and don't mess with the elevated/see through rings.
Marlin is the best by far and very reasonably priced. Why, in part do you think Winchester took a dump? Because they could not produce a lever gun the quality of a Marlin.

If you are set on a 30-30 I would buy a Marlin 336. In today's market high power bolt action rifles like the Stevens Model 200 can be had for less than a new 336. They come in calibers like 308 & 30-06 and are more versatile rifle calibers.

As to scopes I would look to a 3-9X40 and spend as much as you can afford. So, if you buy the 30-30 and decide you want something with more range you can buy another gun and take the scope off the 30-30 without trying to buy a new gun and scope at the same time.

I am a new hunter and am about to buy a 3030 any sugestions on what kind to buy thats not real expensive? I would appreciate any info. I would also like to know what type of scope to pair with it.
Others have given good advice, I'll add some. If you're looking for a 30-30 - an excellent deer cartridge, by the way - get a Marlin 336. A 4x scope, and practice... then kill deer. You will enjoy it.

I would also pick the NEF 30-30. Being a single shot, you can use pointed bullets. Put a 2x7 Nikon Pro-Staff scope on it and your set.

If you're set on 30-30, getting an NEF gives you no advantage of any consequence. Pointed bullets will not give you any discernible advantage at 30-30 ranges on game - NONE. Plus, you'll end up shooting bullets that are less effective on game when they arrive, travelling at 30-30 velocities.

NEF is an okay rifle... but get it for pointed bullets? You'd be much better getting a diff caliber, rather than go that route. Other than pointed bullets - see above, no real benefit - what does an NEF single-shot do better than a Marlin 336?

If you're set on 30-30, getting an NEF gives you no advantage of any consequence, IMHO. Pointed bullets? What discernible advantage at 30-30 ranges on game? None, that I can think of. You'll use bullets that are designed for faster cartridges, and are LESS effective on game when they arrive, travelling at 30-30 velocities. Out of a 30-30, I think a flat-pointed bullet is better than spitzer. I think that what you'd get at with spitzer is very little speed/energy advantage, combined with a less effective bullet (for deer).

NEF is an okay rifle... but get it for pointed bullets? You'd be much better getting a diff caliber, rather than go that route. Other than pointed bullets - see above, no real benefit - what does an NEF single-shot do better than a Marlin 336?
