Default 10-22 QUESTIONS

Ruger 10/22 Action Black
1.00 Tundra Left Hand Brown
1.00 20" Blue Fluted Sporter Barrel
1.00 Magazine
1.00 WeaponKraft Bolt Buffer
1.00 VQ Extended Magazine Release Black
1.00 Power Custom Competition Hammer Kit
1.00 VQ Auto Bolt Release Silver
1.00 Power Custom Titanium Extractor
1.00 Scope Mount

This is the 10-22 I am probably going to put together. What do you guys think? This will be a hunting rifle. And casual shooting off the porch. My major question is about the barrel. Whether I should go with the Sporter, or the heavy bull? The one I selected was the Green Mountain 20 inch fluted sporter, what do you think about this barrel? The gentleman who will be building it said the trigger would be good, but not the best. He said about $200 more to get a target grade trigger. does that sound right? Tom.

Default RE: 10-22 QUESTIONS

Having built 4 and in the midst of a few more let me toss out my thoughts/opinions here...

Stock: pick what fits you best. I've got one of mine built on the Tundra stock and like it. A nice all around stock that works well for field and range applications.

Bbl: Green Mountian is pretty much the best bang for the buck. Without getting into the more expensive ones GM is the way to go. Flutes are more of a matter of visual taste more than anything on these. A bit of weight reduction but niot so much that it makes a big difference and if those extra few ounces are that big of an issue, maybe a new hobby is in order. Heat dissipation, how fast you gonna shoot it so that it's that hot, especially in a hunting scenario? You're not. Also, having anything over 18" is getting past the ideal length for the .22lr cartridge. It reaches peak performance generally in a 17"-18" bbl. I prefer the Whistle Pig bbls myself but have had very good results with Green Mountian as well. Actually,I use thier firesight bblon my 10/22 squirrel gun.

magazine: just keep the factory one. Avaoid any and all with the plastci feed lips. junk! If having a hi-cap mag is really that importnat, spend a bit and buy a good one from tacical inovations. Thiers are two piece and have stinless leed lips. Much better than the ButlerCreek/Hot Lips fodder.

Bolt buffer: whichever is available from whatever retailer your buying other items from Not a big difference im these.

magazine extention: My favorite is the Volqusrtsen one but these are mostly a visual preference

Trigger: You can buy the parts and put them in (or pay a gunsmith to do it) or simply send your entire trigger group complete out to TT Shooterand for about the same as the DIY package you'll have a much better trigger. His are generally regarded as second only to the $300 KIDD trigger. http://www.ttshooter.com/he will also add an extened mag release for around $7 and rework it for the auto bolt release. For what tiny amount of this shows, the color is a moot point in buying a new one.

extractor: try your and shoot it, alot before this. I've had some that really didn't need it nor have any different result after installation. The titanium ones also I see as more of a marketing gimmick than anything. Ever hear of a non-TI one fial becasue of the material?

Scope mount: current models come with one that perectly adequte but depending on the optics you'll use you'll need a higher mount or high rings. Any wever style rings will do but stcik with a good set. Cheap ones are cheap for a reason. For optics, for what it sounds like you're planing to use this for why not use one of the Simmons ones advertised by Natchez www.natchezss.com They're got them for under 440 and are pretty darn good ones too. Not a Burris but for the money you can't really go wrong for a hunting/plinker .22 rifle.

Now you also mention what sounds like someone else will be building this for you. The 10/22 is a very user friendly design and you should easily be able to do all of the above modifications yourself. Lastly, now that you've entered the realm of the 10/22...you need to go here: www.Rimfirecentral.com It's THE home for anything and everything 10/22.
