I'm toying with the idea of sellingan old30-30, my childhood 270,a couple muzzleloaders, and some other junk and putting together a long distance rifle (one you can carry).
I love Gunbroker.com, a very good site.

On the gun-nut/hunting obsession... I wish I could find a way to make them pay!

I have sold several guns in order to buy/make others; I have yet to wish for any of them back.

RE: Why was I born addicted to guns.
Hello,
my name is salty and I too am addicted to guns. It is near xmas time and I have yet to purchase my wife a gift. All I can think of is how I can swindel 600 from our bank account for a new varmint rifle. Do I varmint hunt??? NO... but I have an itch that can only be cured by purchasing a rifle I will only shoot possibly 10 times. I spend 10 hours per day at work surfing ballistic tables trying to pick the right gun... I keep going back to the 22 cal centerfire rifles and then return back to the 243-260 type of guns... Heck, I should just get one of each but there are so many.. I figure if I take 20 per day for breakfast and lunch at work and I work 3 or 4 days per week. Never actually buy the lunch and stash the money I will be able to buy a new rifle once every month and a half!!!!!!!! sounds good but those darn donuts sure are tasty!!!!!!!!!

"....30-30 and .270 pretty much covers the deer hunting envelope.. how long a distance do you want to shoot, that the .270 can't reach?"
I don't hunt deer anymore, although a trophy mulie in an away from home/remotehigh alpine setting could be interesting, as could mountain goat or Big Horn sheep,....yet this would be more for elk and up (and for the occasional speed goat--- those I still enjoy).
After working with the 50 BMG, it has peaked myinterest in the long range thing....
Range? 400 to 800+ (1,000 paper)yards.... Needs to stay supersonic throughout.... Needs to arrive withat least marginalenergy (for my standards)....
Cartridge? Probably a 338-378 Weatherby with removable muzzlebrake, 28" to 30" barrel, 6x24 scope with external turret MOA adjustments, two rifle stocks: one stock "weighted up" heavy for practice and another stocka bit lighter/more normal"hunting weight".... both pillarand steel bedded.

BC,
Point taken, yet I have pretty much shunned these "childhood guns" long ago (40 years on the 30-30 and practically25 years on the 270Win), there is not really even a sense nostalgia for them. Only inertia/heirloom factoris keeping them around, yet the kids don't really want them either, probably throw the featherweight 338WinMag Sako in to help finance the deal since I sure don't needthree 338's. Theremaining (original)338WinMag I got when I was 23 andISthe "nostalgia ridden/string of accomplishment/never give it up" one. My youngest also got his first elk with that rifle and kinda considers it "his".

I understand everybody ain't made of money, but I suggest you don't get rid of your childhood guns. I sold some nice ones due to football bets when in college, and regretted. I ended up buying another 30-30 recently just cause of that. I wanted to replace my childhood gun. Now, looking for a 243win I sold. Now, I really don't sell quality guns.

I am kind of unique in that Iam the reason that really got my dad interested in shooting and hunting. A neighbor boy down theroadabout 4 years older than me let me tag a long with him when he went hunting. We were always doing something in the woods. I wanted a .410 shotgun so bad when I was 9 years old that I tried to make my own. I sawed off a tent pole to just the right length, and attached it to a curved heavy stick. I then started to collect the powder fromsome firecrackers I had, but I never got to shoot it because my dad caught me just before I blew myself up.
That Christmas I got my .410, and my Dad soon followed in the gun interest. We have hunted and shot together ever since. You couldn't pay me enough for that little gun he probably paid about $50.00 for at Western Auto.
That .410 is still in service as my dedicated preseason scouting moccasin killer. It is very effective.
At the moment, I am waiting for the fiddle back maple NEF stock to come in the mail and finish it. I wan't to swap it out with my wife and daughters .243 youth stocked NEF Handi, and fine tune it to my liking. Itreally doesn't take much to make me happy when it comes to guns.
Also I have had onmy mindto geta NEF 7mm-08.......................................
Oh Well

RE: Why was I born addicted to guns.
I can honestly say that I regret getting rid of every gun that I've gotten rid of!
Fortunately, the one that means the most to me, IS still in MY gun safe!
It is a Savage O/U .410/.22 LR! It is not worth a lot of money, but it is priceless to me!
My dad had bought me a used, singleshot .410 and I traded it to a friend, plus five dollars, for this Savage O/U.
My dad got mad when he found out that I traded my gun, and I got my arse whipped good when he found out I gave my friend five bucks, to boot! It really wasn't the trade, but I just had not told the whole truth!
That was almost 40 years ago! Dad has been gone for 31 years now, and I lost contact with my "best friend" about 25 years ago! But this memory is as fresh as if it happened yesterday! I seldom ever shoot this gun, but I thank God that I have not been stupid enough to ever get rid of this one!
