I have watched a lot of folks complain about Ruger 77 rifles recoiling "more than they should." More so than other make/models; apparently they are not too "public friendly."

M-77's aside, lots of folks move up to heavier recoiling rifles without correspondingly upgrading their knowledge of recoil management

Length of pull, drop, weight, quality rubber, eye relief/scope selection &mounting, simple psychology and lack of instruction or knowledge regarding recoil managementare the more common places folks go wrong. DIY isadmirable; however, knowledge and training are better solutions. Otherwise, soooo many folks just grope around in the darkand many give up and retreat to the popgun section and practice singing the magnumitis hymn.

It is a disease.

Of course, I have to include the disclaimer that the upshot of this post does not apply to those with deteriorated/deteriorating physical conditions or the meek or those whole just "don't think theycan do it." (They are right, they can't.)

Edit.

That is one way of putting it. Another more accurate phrasing would be, many smarten up and proceed to using the rifles which meet their hunting needs, rather than satisfying their or someone elses egos or mistaken ideas of what is required to successfully hunt [deer, bear, pig, wapiti]
Need has nothing to do with it. You sure don't need a gun for deer. I haven't killed with a gun in 2 years (besides Muzzleloader) and still manage to bring hom 5-6 deer a year. Its all about learning to shoot. You still may have issues with shooting with the lower powered cartridges, just doesn't come out as much.

Ruger 77s do NOTrecoil more than other rifles with same weight, caliber, stock dimensions, etc. That said,I think the man's biggest problem is with scope eye relief. We don't know what scope he is using. Is he "stock crawling"? He may simply need to trade scopes. That failing, trade the rifle for a 7mm08.NUFF SAID. end of discussion PERIOD
my humble opinion

You have to be about the biggest braggart on this forum, why don't you answer people's questions [A], instead of throwing in a little comment about how recoil intolarent some people are [B}, compared to you, I don't care how many "big guns" you own, or how many years you have been hunting elk [C], you have no right to talk in such a boastful manner [D]
Chant,

[A] I'm thinking I answered his question much more so than your suggestions which were....
(1) either "sell it", or (2) this quote below:

"....Since shooting form is a little different for everybody, let one of your friends shoot the rifle and see if it dings him in the face."
[B} Some folks are recoil intolerant (for various reasons.... some of it being lack of training)
[C] Idon't recall making any comparisons to myself or my attempting to make any points based on the rifles I own or the years I've spent hunting elk.
[D] Any time I don't include the "disclaimer" in responding tothese "recoil threads", Iend up listening to all the "but I'm an exception" lines so Istrive to address a portion of those in advance.
================================================== =

BTW, I'm sorry, but as a general rule, the 7mmRemMag JUST IS NOT that big of a kicker, it is a 30-06 equivalent. That said, I repeat thatI haveseen and heard people cringe on those M-77 models with the stainless action/barreland black plastic stock (thin width, with the big "Ruger" stamp inset into the side of the cheek/buttarea, seemingly just a "mean" combo IMO).

It IS masterable, but not by chance and accident, go to a pro.

It sounds like it couldbea good time to take up reloading, no shame in a load that would duplicate a 7mm-08 or .280. For the hit you would take on a trade you could more than likely outfit yourself with the basics and as you gain confidence back shooting milder loads you can always load 'em back up to mag level. Youmight even enjoy it, it's great when a load you put together gets the job done. Kinda adds to the 'successful hunt' thing!

GUYS, GUYS, GUYS…easy!!!
Thanks again for the advice, I really appreciate all of it… well most of it. I’m not really sure where a few of you get off judging my shooting ability over the internet but maybe Viagra isn’t working for you and being a jerk on the internet gets you to your happy place, I’m not judging.

Anyway, to answer the scope question I'm shooting a 9/32 Nikon Buckmaster.

I’m not a guy that is afraid of magnum loads; the only thing I shoot out of my BPS 10ga are 3.5 inch mags and I run through about two to four boxes a season from early goose in September to the last days of duck season in December. I don’t have the flinch with the BPS but I do with the M77. My guess is that the scope on my BPS has never whacked me in the head…why… because it doesn’t have a scope on it . Nothing to do with magmawhateveryoucallit.

I’m like my dog I guess; he ranges too far and I whistle him in. He comes back because he’s conditioned that if he doesn’t come back he gets a zap from the e-collar around his neck. I put the M77 to my shoulder and I’m already thinking I’m going to get hit in the head with the scope, I flinch and the deer goes jumping into the brush. Anyway, to all of you guys that have said I’m over gunned for white tails, I agree and that’s why the Ruger is going in on a trade. If I loose some money on it, oh well, at least I’ll hopefully have a gun I enjoy shooting. Thanks again for all the constructive advice. It’s cool that we are all a community of sportsman that can bounce ideas off each other. You are all tops in my book

Listen man, the facts just doesn't tell us this. You can spin it anyway you like, but if you have that much of an issue shooting a 140gr bullet from a 7mm mag, you won't be able to shoot a 180gr bullet from a 30-06.

I may be wrong, you sound like a once a year practice type of guy, with your one deer gun theory. I don't care what you get, if you can't handle a 7mm Remmag, you will have issues with most guns.

I know its no fun to hear it. But it is what it is. You come on here, and ask a pretty silly question, you already know the answer for. You get replies that are honest from some, and replies from others, that tell you to shoot the gun they shoot, and if its not what you want to hear, you cry foul.

Oh, I can sympathize with the getting smacked in the forehead thing. I had long lost the threaded eyepiece ring on the Bushnell on my '06 (leaves a very sharp edge by the way) and, while sighting in a hot load, it got me good one day. Definitely hard to tell where bullets are going with blood trying to run into your eye! That's also good for a laugh from other shooters at the range too, of course. Worse yet, I had to replace that scope a few years ago and, believe it or not,the first day hunting the ring fell off this scope! I gotta remember to keep a bandaid or two in my wallet, i guess....

I hate to see someone get rid of a gun for any reason. I have sold a few and still regret it. Yeah, it may be overkill for 100 yard shots but like you said, you may like to take a trip to hunt bigger game and need a larger caliber. I would suggest you set your scope forward just a hair more than it is and try a different bullet. Check out the Reminggton Managed-recoil loads. They are supposed to reduce the recoil by up to 50% and keep good accuracy out ot 200 yards. That should keep the scope off your face and be good for where you are hunting now. Then move back up to a different ammo in the future once you're ready. Heres a link so you can check them out.

Just an idea, can't hurt to go spend $15.00 on a box of shells if it may fix your problem. Good luck with the gun. Hopefully you'll be able to keep it and enjoy it.
