I am a big 358 fan. But there is at least one thing that the 338 federal does better than the 358 and thats the better selection of bullets for the 338 federal. Its particularly true for the light for caliber bullets.

One of the challenges for the 358 is a good pointed deer bullet. The 200g Hornady spire is a good bullet but its a pretty tough bullet. The two lighter speers the 180 and 220 are pretty tough and are flat nosed to boot. There isnt a 35 cal ballistic tip and the lightest 35 cal accubond is the 225 accubond and that takes up a lot of space in a 358. Hornady doesn't make a sst or interbond in 35 cal. My choice for a deer bullet in my bolt 358's is the 200g tsx if that doesn't work its the 200g Hornady SP which I think is just a little tougher than Id like. the one bullet I haven't looked at is the Rem 200g corelock PSP.

For deer its a much better situation in the 338 the accubond is availible in both 180 and 200g versions. Barnes makes a 180 tsx. Every one seems to make a cup and core for the 338 and the 200g speer is fairly soft and would make a good deer bullet.

Of course once you get to 225g in either cartidge there are gobs of great choices.

On the upside for the 358 is the ability to use pistol bullets..you can pretty much explode a ground hog with a full house load and 125g HP

Most of the bullets that is available for the 338 Fed. are bullets designed for the 338 Mag. Which means they shouldn't operate well at 338 Fed. velocities.
as for the 358 Win. the selection of bullets maybe less but are more apt to work at 358 Win. velocities,,the 200 gr. Cor-lokt SSP would be a good choice for the 358 Winny, I once had a 358 Win. built on a Vz-24 action (boy wuz it heavy!) any way I worked up some loads useing the 200gr. RN Rem. Cor-Lokt that was developed for use in the 35 Rem.,and I used the combo to take a Whitetail Buck ,,the bullet punched two holes in the Buck one going in size of 35cal. hole ..one leaving the size a little larger than a golf ball..devestating performance...What a blood trail pieces of lung in with the blood it ran for about 30ft. then crashed literally.
I sold the rifle,, just to heavy ,big thick heavy contoured barrel .
Guess it weighed 9lb.s W/O scope
