Put a 24" barrel on a 308 and 22" barrel on a 30-06 and watch two ballistic 'sisters' look like twins. And then if you want to hand load you can easily have the 308 past factory 30-06.

Having said that and having given the whole 308/30-06 alot of thought and time reading charts I still laugh when people say the 308 can't do something a 30-06 can. Unless you load the 200+ bullets your barrel could make up the little difference.
For practical purposes, with bullets under 180 grains, the two are essentially ballistic twins with factory loads. A deer won't be able to tell the difference. But, for larger bullets, the 06 definitely has an advantage. And, I would expect, given the larger case, handload vs. handload, the 06 still comes out a little ahead.

More like Necturines to Oranges
I've heard everything from 10 to 40-50 to 100fps per inch. And it stands to reason that it would depend alot on which cartridge you were talking about. There's gonna be a different number when comparing 44mag pistols to carbines then 7mmRUM carbine to 'long' guns. I've brought the whole 308/30-06 debate up to discussion before and a tactical/sniping forum much like this one and received a good amount of info from guys who know the 308 and 30-06 pretty darn well. I was given the 2" comparison and the whole topic of handloads. I also got the impression that the ceiling for both with handloads put you back to a 150-200fps advantage...which brings us back to the barrel length. Where the 30-06 comes into its own is with the heavy heavy bullets. Something alot guys don't feel is necassary in the 30 cal with todays better bullets.

RE: caliber gun
I guess my answer to the original post would be to say that the 30-30 has probably killed more deer than any other, but it has been around longer than most others, too. The 30-06 is PROBABLY the most used round for all - around big game hunting in North America, mainly due to the wide variety of factory ammo available for it, along with it's excellent reputation. With that said, I would personally perfer something a little larger for the BIG bears, but the '06 certainly has accounted for it's share also
I also have to agree with the fact that the .270 Win. has a huge following also, and feel the others fall in line somewhere. Just my opinion ..

Like I said-ALL other things being equal-that means both with equal barrel length AND handloaded-PLEASE check the capicity of both cases. Do you realize that when they developed the T-65=7.62X51=.308 they simply shortened the 30-06 case?????? apperantly you REALLY need to research some more.
