Default 338 Federal ?...ZZZZ

Fellows is it just me or doesthe 338 Fed. Vel. for a 210 gr. bullet seem familar to a properly handloaded 8X57

338 Fed 210gr. 2630 fps
8X57 200gr. 2675 fpshttp://www.realguns.com/loads/8x57mmjs.htm
I understand theres a .015 diff. in Dia. but I don't think a Whitetail would notice..

then again 30-06 with a 180gr. bullet(higher SD than the above) @ 2900fps Hornaday LM

you're right there, but the point to the .338 Federal is the shorter action and I guess shorter and lighter rifle.

I don't see any more use for the 338 Fed than for a 300WSM..

This is a hollow arguement. How many calibers that are out there do we really need. Why the 338 and the 340? Why the 270 and the 280? why the 30-06 and the 308? Can we really find a task for everyone of the calibers available? Each and every one may have a little nich to fill. Be happy for the choices. Why the 300 Wn, 300 Weatherby 300 H&H 308 Norma Mag 30-378, 300 RUM. The 338 Federal is a very efficient hard hitting non Magnum lower recoil rifle than many of its competitors.

The one real advantage that the 33 calibers have is the use of 250 gr. bullets because of there great SD ,but the 338 Fed. may not be able to use this bullet because of the length of th 250 gr.er takeing up room in the small case..and the 250 gr. bullet is constructed to work at 338 mag. Vel.

(This is a hollow arguement) Quote James B.

Not an arguement,just a obersevation

I believe its best bullet will be the 185 grain TSX. You are probably right about the lack of case capacity for the 250 Grainer.

I'd like to see the re-birth of the 358 win. and the 35 Whelen to be chambered more often.Or even the 338-06 chambered in affordable rifles that way you could utilize heavier bullets .Maybe the 338 Fed. will kick start it.
But I'd be surprised if it happened.

At least CZ chambers for the 9.3X62

A very good ,and true statement

I just picked up a 35 Whelen barrel for my NEF. I have it sighted in but thats as far as I have gone with that project. I think the BLR is the only thing chambered new in the 358. At least thats all I have seen. Its a bit of a mystery to me why the 338-06 has not enjoyed much popularity as its a great round. The Encore is the best way to go for a 338-06 and I believe the chamber the 358 as well.

That is my complaint with this cartridge.... It just isn't needed on smaller amimials, and doesn't have enough case capacity for the bullets that SHOULD be used on big animials!
