338 Federal ?...ZZZZ

RE: 338 Federal ?...ZZZZ
It just isn't needed on smaller amimials, and doesn't have enough case capacity for the bullets that SHOULD be used on big animials!
If a fellow handloads and has a Mauser chambered in 8X57,he can beat the 338 Fed. ,and now that they have a 325WSM they are and will be better constructed bullets...The old war horse8X57 looks better and better , with modern powders and high quality bullets...

RE: 338 Federal ?...ZZZZ
(If a fellow is hand loading the 8mm Mauser then why wouldn't he also hand load the .338 Federal and surpass both the 8mm Mauser hand loaded and .338 Federal factory loads?) Quote BigBulls
I'd say the338 Fed. is going to be rolling outloaded to the Max by Federal..
At one time I thought of having a 307 necked to a 338, for a 336, but i saw no real advantage to the 307 or 356 ( At least for the expense)
I also looked at having a 336 in 32 Special mre chambered for a 32/307 or could be called 8mm/307...but once again saw no measureable difference to the 307. Now theres a 308 Marlin... which looks like a flatter shooting round than the 30/30... How about a 358/308 Marlin ?
See thats how new cartridges are born....
The 308 Win. is one heck of a round ,for use in a short action,is the 338 Fed better ? Thats another question. Is the 308 Win. better than a 303 Brit. or a 8x57.. may-be 30-06..ballistically theres not much difference.. (to a White tail at 'bout 175 yd's)You guys know the Vel.s SD of these cartridges and bullets ,and selection of bullets for these calibers..
I guess it boils down to to a few intangiables..
Such as , if a person reloads , Pefers Short action to Long action or maybe pefers a intermedate action or a quick #4 Enfield action , Heavy bullets to light or visa-versa.. Maybe they like a larger Dia. bullet, maybe a longer skinny bullet wih SD out the Ying Yang..( I favor the 6.5X55)
I lean toward older cartridges ..Just my perfence..no real reason.
The only 2 newer cartridges I have shoot and hunt with are the 375 Win. and 444M. If I need or feel I need more thump or reach I'll grab a 30-06 in stead of my 6.5X55 but last few years It ismy 6.5X55thst I reach for first and alot more often ...
Will the 338 Fed. make the cut ..I'd say it will be more poplar than the 358 Win. (Why,? I don't know .) but its fate will be simailar to the 260 Rem.(Which its only fault is the 7-08)
(As the only fault to the 8x57 is the 30/06)
I guess time and Gun writers will tell .

Wouldn't the exact same thing apply to the .358 Winchester if it applys to the .338 Federal? Assuming you would want an equally high section density number on both bullets.

Certainly valid points, but i don't own the 358 Win. for the same reasons i won't be buying a .338 Fed...
