Default Buying My First Gun

Hey all, I'm looking to buy my first deer rifle. Used specifically for deer, I've already decided that I want to get a .270 Pump Action but that's about all I've decided. Before I purchase a gun, what kinds of things will I be looking for in the gun?? What brands of rifles whould I be loooking at first of all, but I'm more worried about the small intangibles quality wise that realy make the gun such as weight, stock, barrel, and such....what types of things will I be looking specifically for in aquality gun? Like, the differences between what the barrel is made of?? the coating on theinside of the barrel, are these going to make any difference?I don't want to get a gun that's not going to perform to the standards I want it to. Thanks in advance.

Josh

I believe if you are set on a 270 pump your choices are pretty limited. If you went with a semi-auto you could have another choice or two.

Don't get a Remington model 710, thats all I can tell you, other than that, most guns are pretty good.

A pump Action .270 is pretty hard to come by, have you considered getting a bolt action rifle?

I have.. but I like the pump a lot more than the bolt action. I use a 30.06 Pump and a 30-30 Lever and the pump is by far my favorite of the two. I've only shot a .22 in the bolt action and can't say I really enjoyed the bolt. btw, what's wrong with the Remington model 710??

Nothing really. A lot of the guys on here just don't like it but I have one in a .243 and it shoots fine.

The 710 is made with cheap components, has a horrible bolt throw, you can't load it from the top, the trigger guard is molded into the stock, the magazine is plastic, and they really arn't very good guns, some people on this site claim to have good luck with the rifle, good for them, as for the majority the 710 just will not do. And also the barrel is crammed into the reciever indtead of being screwed in.

Actually you can load the 710 from the top. Just an FYI.
