.270 or 30-06?

RE: .270 or 30-06?
I recently went from an 06 to a 270. Not being knowledgable about ammo I've always used the Core-Lokts. With that round my 06 was hands down the better deer rifle. This week I'm going to experiment with some Winchester Silvertips and see how the 270 performs with those.

I really don't see the 270 having that much less recoil than an 06. Anyway, between those two, I wouldn't worry about recoil, it's there for both, get used to it.
I don't know if you've been swayed yet, but I don't think you'll be disapointed with either. Nice thing about debating these two cartridges, you really can't go wrong.

If I had to choose one, it would be the '06. It can be used in a wee bit more situations. Both are good deer rilfes, but the '06 is a very good (though probably not the best) elk rifle. Probbaly better than the 270 on elk mainly because you have a better selection of heavier bullets like 180 grain. If you head out to the deer woods and forget you ammo, the gas station at podunk Oklahoma is more likely to have 30 '06 and 30 30 than any other cartridge.
If you reload, there are more components for the '06 and 30 cals than any other.
But the 270 is a dandy round and is such a classic western cartridge because it may shoot a tad flatter than the '06. Jack O'conner took alot of Elk, Sheep, and Muleys with the 270 out west. You could do alot worse than follow in Jacks footsteps.
Go to your local gun store and price a basic box of each. Maybe that will help. I think '06 is about the cheapest big game ammo out there.
But you should get one of each!!!!

They both cost the same. And, with the 270 becomming more and more popular, I've seen the 270 at many out of the way mini marts and gas stations, right next to the 06.
I do agree that the 06 could be used in slightly more scenarios, but it's so close that I think it comes down to personal choice.

Aside from dangerous game (large bears) and bisonI would hunt anything on this continent with either one to the same yardages.
I have both of them and neither one show a distinct advantage over the other.
Having said that, I am partial to the .270 simply because it has a slightlyflatter trajectory.
However, since you are hunting in thick woods andaren't shooting at any great distances I would look real hard at the .308 or the 7mm-08.
