Default 30-30 scoped?

So I hunted with my 30-30 scopedlast year and as much as I love my Marlin 30-30, I'm having trouble with the scope. I've got a 4x on it, and I guess because of the short size of it it's difficult for me to get lined up on the scope correctly on a consistent basis. I know there was a thread on the 30-30 I read the other night and I agree withalot of you guys andI really like the new Leverolution ammo and was looking forward to hunting with it thisseason.Anyone got a specific scope the prefer for these guns? Are most people shooting open sights or what?

Before the advent of the LeverEvolution ammo, putting a scope on a 30-30 was like putting nitrous on a lawn mower.

Now that LeverEvolution has almost made the 30-30 a legit 250 yard deer rifle I say put on a fixed low power scope or a 2-5x so if you have to you can reach out there to 200+ yards anduse the much improved ballistics of the LeverEvolution ammo.

Something like this would be my first choice:

$369 for a small 1.25-4x20 scope?!?!Man, that's about the cost of a brand new 30-30 anyway!

I had a fixed 4x32 scope on my Marlin 30AS, and it was okay, but the recticle broke or lost its "zero", so I took it off along with the weaver base. I just use my 30-30 in the heavy thick stuff and it's fine. Where I hunt, I don't intend to make a 50 yard shot. Plain iron sights still work fine and do the job for me.

With the new Leverevolution ammo, putting a scope on a 30-30 would be beneficial, but again, it all depends on where you hunt and what you intend to use the 30-30 for anyway.

Edit: P.S. I am just used to shooting my 30-30 with open sights and like how it handles that way. I doubt if I will put a scope on it again... Some people scope their 30-30's. Others don't. Whatever floats your boat....

If I ever get a 30-30 (and I will most likely someday, it justs seems like a gun you need ), it'll wear a Weaver K2.5 or similar

It was just a suggestion. The scope isn't permanently affixed to the gun you know....it could be used somewhere ese.

tschaef nailed it.. I have a scoped .270 that I use for huntin open fields or open woods, but once I get back in the thick stuff I use an open sighted marlin 30-30. I shot a nice buck last year with it from 70 yards through some brush and it didnt run but 20-30 yards.. good luck

I used to have a scope on my 336 30-30 and I took it off and had buckhorn open sites put back on it. The short barrel length of the gun just made it hard to get a steady shot off with the 30-30. I have missed more dear with that gun being scoped than I have with any other gun. Now with iron sites I am on the board (within 6 inches of the bulls), every time at 100 yards and under.

Well I guess I am just the odd man out. I had a 30-30 and it was scoped. And all my friends 30-30's are scoped. I had a 3x 9 x 40 on it. My reason for that kind of magnification was because I wanted to be able to look the deer over real well. My eyes are not the best in the world, and it helps me to get a good look at the deer. If I got another 30-30, I would do it the same way again. The minimum I would go would be a good 2 x 7 scope. And I would look at something in the Nikon line or the Upper end Bushnell line. And if you are having fitting problems ( because of the short stock ), you could get a sims slip on recoil pad, and that would give you an extra inch ( roughly ) added to the stock, making a better fit.

But as I said, that is just me and my opinion. A lot of people would disagree with me, but it worked for me, and it might just work for you. But by the same token, it might not. That is for you to decide. If you are not sure, go to your local gun shop, and take your gun with you , and ask if you can slip one on and see if it helps your fit and ability to line up on the scope. I know at my local shop, they are more than happy to do it.

Good luck and good hunting.

God Bless

Where do you guys find these fixed power scopes? I've been looking for a small fixed 4x and can't find anything, even witht the new BassPro that openend in Toronto.
I'm in the biggest city in Canada and have checked every sporting goods store in town, and I honestly can't say that ever even seen a fixed low power scope!
