I've been told the short mags dont group as well. Is this true? I have a regular 7 rem mag. cant get the groups any tighter at 100.

I have a remington 700 bdl ss in 7 mm saum. The recoil seems a little more than my 270. As far as accuracy goes with 140 gr. accubonds or 175 gr. sierra's it will punch the same hole. I use mine a lot for 600 yard matches.

The caliber is very accurate. I have owned two of them, and I still have the Savage HB 112. The WSM head spaces off the shoulder, which theoretically should make the cartridge more accurate than a belted magnum. Also the shorter fatter case should give a more consistent burn rate. The burn rate is what affects the pressure curve, which is what yields less recoil. I am sure someone else can explain this better than I have, I just know that it is true.

It is also worth mentioning: I am in the process of ordering an Encore barrel from Bullberry Barrel works-they refuse to chamber the WSM's. Their comment on their website is that the WSM's are not safe. Their opinion is worth listening to, they list hundreds of caliber's and I am sure they would chamber the WSM's if they did not believe what they are saying. Tom.

In rifles of the same weight, the wsms will provide slightly less recoil. However, many of the rifles chambered in the wsm cartridges are quite light and theyproduce just as much or more felt recoilthan a standard weight regular magnum.

I have never heard that the WSM's were hard to get good groups with. Usually they are pretty accurate.

As I said, I owned both 300 win mag and now 300 wsm and haven't been able to detect any difference in my groups. But I sure do group better with a .270!

I seem to get consistent results with the WSM's than I do with the Win mags and etc. After some work, I usually can get most guns shooting acceptable, but notice, things were very consistent with the WSM. I mean, my groups would show a gassian shape over the powder load. Starting load 3" groups, and it would go down and down and then groups start opening the higher I go. So it was easy to make a choice on powder load.

If I was looking for a deer only rifle I would look at .25-06, .270, 7mm-08 myself. Why beat yourself up with more recoil and a heavier to carry rifle?

I decided not to get a short mag and I bought a remington 7600 in 7mm-08. I put a leupold 4.5-14x40 on it. The only problem is I am out of deer tags So i will have to wait till next year to use it.
