RE: marlin 30-30
I have a pre64 Model 94 I recieved from my uncle when I was 12.. I am 40 now and my oldest boy turned 12 on the 23rd of October. Man does time fly..Anyway I am going to be hunting a new place this weekend and while setting up my stand today I thought man....No 270 in here. Have to break out the 30-30......Been about 20 years since I have a shot a deer with it.... I know it will still get the job done.

Heres a Canadian brute taken with a 30-30, my 1st buck, hard to tell from the pic but this deer was huge. Don't let anyone tell you that the 30-30 is a marginal size for big animals, I see people carrying them for moose.

Wow... what a great buck!!! [8D]
I think the 30-30 is still a great rifle and is legendary. Millions of deer have fallen to the 30-30 over the decades. With the right round of ammo and shot placement, you can down a moose or elk without a problem.
Here's my baby...

Great Gun! My dad bought his Marlin 336 in the 70's used it for about 20 years (can't tell you how many deer he killed w/it) then in 93 he gave it to me and I killed my first deer w/it and about 10-15 after that. At 50 yards it cuts the same hole. Classic gun!

Yup... From that very first shot at a range, you just fall in love with a classic lever gun. It reminds me of how I came to "acquire" my Marlin 30AS:
{rehashing old story....}
I have a co-worker here at my company who owned the Marlin 30ASand used to go hunting with it foryears and years. Well, over time he got less and less into hunting, and the old Marlin just sat in a closet. Well, next thing you know he got married, and soon after had a kid... Then we all know the story of what happens next. The wife laid down the law and said, "the gun goes".
So, then he told me about it at work, and let me borrow it for the weekend with a half a box of rounds. If I like it, I could buy it for a steal. A darn near mint condition "closet classic" Marlin 30AS. Let me tell you... after that first couple of rounds at the range, I just fell in love with it. It just comes right to the shoulder like it was meant to be there. I mean, I can close my eyes, shoulder the rifle, open my eyes, and I'm sighting right down the barrel! Long story short, that following Monday at work, I handed him a check and the Marlin came home with me for good.

I used a 30-30 last year. I killed a 4 point w/ it. I shot it right in the heart. and the bullet didn't make it all the way through the deer. We found it in three peices. So I personally don't trust them w/ big bucks. But they are good guns.
