What cartridge for deer/bear in Vt?
OK,
I'm not lookin to start a drawn out thread here, but what the heck.
I'm in America's Hometown (Plymouth, MA.) and until recently it had been a long time since I hunted out of state.
Anyway, I've always been loyal to my model 870 in12 Guage, even took it to Vt last year.
Then came the possibilty of taking a bear.
We met on a hill and each agreed today was not the day!
So I'm goin back up the hill this year and I'd like to be a little better gunned.
I've got a 30-30 (winchester lever action).
I'm considering 30-06, (maybe 308?) or better.
Most of the shots would have been under 100yds.
The bear was less than 100 ft!
But I'd still like the ability for longer shots.
(It's the old Jarhead thing!)
OK have fun with it!

And myself, the 30-06. You want the biggest wound you can get on a bear, as their thick fur will make tracking a problem and the faster they're down the better. And the ability to make longer shots? The 30-30s rainbow trajectory and poor energy output will make this hard, so the -06 would shine here.

Welcome to the HuntingNet forum.
I've been hunting in VT for more then 35 years. All of the calibers you've listed will work fine. I will add that 30-30's have probably taken more deer in VT then any other cartridge, but as my father likes to say, they missed more too.
I like 30.06 because the the variety of ammo availble. .270 are also very popular around the state with .300 WSM coming on strong. I would pick a gun and action that you're comfortable withand the caliber (of the ones you listed) will be less of a issue.
Best of Luck!
