Karamojo Bell killed most of his elephants with the 7mm - and even some with a .256 ( 6.5x54 mannlicher). for him, correct bullet placementwas everything.
John Taylor killed numerous cape buffalo with his 22 long rifle.... Not sure either instance has anything to do with this thread though...

The origional question can't be properly answered untill we find out what the new custom rifle will be used for...

6.5x284 would be my top choice, 6.5 swede would be my second.

25-06 AI built on a 700 frame with a pac-nor 28in heavy barrel, 1-9 twist, hs precision laminated thumbhole stock.

i have looked into 25-06 ai and 280 ai here lately and both are very interesting. 25-06 ai i just a shade behind the 257 why and 280 ai is even less behind the 7mm rem mag. both are high on my list of possibilities. any one had much experience with either one?

I have owned or currently own almost every caliber you mentioned in your original post. I really like my 25-06's and 270's, but you will never go wrong with the 280. I believe it is the most versatile round there is for medium game.

The only thing you have to do to an AI cartridge to make it it's best is fireform and necksize it. It's easy to do that, but they will still shoot factory ammo too. My freind has the 280 AI and buys factory ammo and shoots it, which forms the case, then you dont FL size it, just neck size, and it holds more powder. The AI's are all awesome. A 25-06 is just an awesome round either way. It's a medium game short and long range nightmare.
