Default 25.06 ????

I have an opportunity to
purchase a Rugar #1 25-06 single
shot rifle in immaculate condition
for $350. I would use it for deer hunting
only. I hunt in florida where most shots
are less than 100 yards. But shots
do come up for 200 and up. Question:
how is this rifle on short range shots
say 50 to 75 yards and what would be
the maximum effective range and last but
not least, do you think the price is right?

A rifle that works well at longer ranges will do fine at shorter ranges. A 25-06 with the right bullet can handle deer at 300 yards with proper shot placement. I can't comment on the price because I don't have my reference books with me.

That is a great price for that gun. If you don't get it, let me know. I'm in central Florida. The deer we shoot at down here will drop like a rock with a properly placed shot with 25-06. If I were to buy a new gun today, that's the gun I'd buy. The only gun I'd rather have in that range is an older Win mod 70 in .257 Roberts.

350 dollars that is a steal for an Number 1..the effective range will be exactly what it will be for any other bolt rifle chambered in the same caliber except you are getting the velocity gains of a 26" barrel and not a 24. I have 2 one in 280 and the other in 45/70 and trust me they did not cost me 350 dollars when I bought them. You can get the serial number off the rifle and call Ruger and ask them when the gun was made. If it was made in the late sixties thru the early seventies you have essentially a custom rifle on your hand at that time the wood was better than current number 1's and they came from the factory with a douglas barrel. The last couple of years they invested in their own barrel making machinery and they should be real good shooters.

I also had a Number 1 in 25-06. Buy it you won't have any regrets. Limit your shots to the distance you practice at.

That's an excellent value! I had a 1 V in .25/06, and it would shoot less than MOA with 100 and 120-grain bullets! What a long-range deerslayer!!

Keep yore powder dry!!

THANKS FOR THE INPUT. I bought the gun
and took it to the range yesterday.
I shot a three shot group at 100 yards
saw only one hole through the binoculars.
My heart sank until I looked closer and
realized i had a clover leaf moa.
Im a happy man.
