If I'm not mistaken, the SPS only refers to the stock being synthetic and the weapon being designed for a specific purpose. SPS = Special Purpose Synthetic. I just got the Remington 700 SPS in 300 win mag, and that's the same designation. Only difference is the stock as far as I can tell.

That makes perfect sense. Right on Remingtons website they state all the 870's have the same actions in them, the only differences in them are cosmetic.
And for a FYI, I was at Gander Mountain in Toledo OH this weekend and they had a synthetic 870 slug gun for $300 some dollars. You could probably do a bit better on the price I think.
