Totoe I have only shot one 7mm mag and the recoil is very close to the recoil from my 300 Win mag . The recoil from those two were a little less than my 300 RUM. The 300 RUM was less than my friends 338 Win mag. As i look over this list I must shake my head a wonder if I ever will be sane. I use the 454 Casull when letting barrels of rifles cool. But in answere, no it will not break your shoulder. I don't know about the trade though.I do have a Ruger but I perfer Remingtons just my personal choice. But if I could keep only one rifle it would be my 300 Win mag.

In my experience the recoil of the .300 winchester and the 7mm remington are pretty close. But the .300 does kick just a little harder. It will not break your arm, or feel like for that matter, if you can handle the recoil of the 7mm. On the trading matter, you should do what you think is best. But if you did'nt know i thought i would let you know that your remington is worth quite a bit more than the ruger. You can usually pick up a used ruger all-weather with the old zytel stock for right around $400. Hope this helps ya out.

Provided you are talking about a 300 Win Mag, the recoil isn't bad at all. Comparable to a 7mm Rem Mag, all things being equal. One question though, why would you even think about trading a Remington 700 Varmint in 7mm-08 for a Ruger anything? Have you shot it yet? 7mm-08 is one of the best cartridges around.

If you can shoot a .300 magnum accurately, then it's fine for deer. My personal favorite deer rifle is my .300 Weatherby Sako. I've taken deer as close as 20 yards with it and suffered no excessive meat loss. But then I should add that I almost always shoot em' through the ribs and try to avoid shoulder shots at all costs. No, you don't need that much power for deer, but so what. All that really matters is whether or not you can hit what you're aiming at. I'd shoot it before buying it, though, to make sure you're okay with the added recoil.

If your 7mm-08 is a Varmint Special, and you're looking for a deer rifle, take the Ruger .300 Win Mag in trade without hesitation. Bull barrels are simply no fun to tote around in the deer woods all day.

However, if you're just looking to maybe get another rifle, keep the 7mm-08. You have a far better piece than what is being offered in return.
