I suspect there is something to hang time although I have no clue how to prove it. Are those articles available on the internet James? If I planned regular hunts in Montana or Idaho where you see the game at artillery range, I would have a fast belted magnum for sure. And should I decide to do that someday, I will get one. When I got rifle for my son I got a 308 with decent accuracy. Although initially intended for deer, I could not guess where he might be hunting 20 years from now. And he would stand a good chance of winning an argument with any beast he might run into with a .30 cal.

The artical about the heart valves and drama to the whole system was in Outdoor life a couple years ago. Some of the articals on Hang time were on the internet. I think from shooting times or guns and ammo. If I run on to them again I will post them. I have been interested in all thing guns since I was five or so. I like to know how things work. You can't learn to much and what I read, I try to prove in the field or apply in the field. I keep pretty close track of what has and has not worked over the years.

Well, field conditions count. The British were pretty happy with their .38 200 grain bullets for their revolvers in WWII, but it would be heresy today. I am a bit of a fan of old things.

ORIGINAL: oldelkhunter

also extremely effective on all big game Deer, Bear and Moose. This, even though theywere only loaded to 2400-2450 fps.
Thats not fast enough for big game ..you need at least 3300 to get that bullet going

This is my take on dropping animals in their tracks...
No question proper cal., shot placement, and bullet performance is critical
factors on determining quickhumane kills.........
BUT I THINK THE UNDERLYING RESULT OF THIS "DROP IN ITS TRACKS THEORY", BOILS DOWN TO THE ANIMALS DETERMINATION TO LIVE and SURVIVE...
MIND OVER MATTER...........

I would use a Barnes 180 gr. XLC FB, XLC BT, or TSX BT. Good luck.
