Deerhunter, you do realize the 280 shoots the same bullet but with around 100fps faster performance than the 7mm-08?

Yeah. The 7mm-08 is a necked down 308 while the 280 is a necked down 30-06 case. Both shoot the same bullet, 284 diameter.

Hey guys....no offense but the 280 shoots the same bullet 200 feet per second faster that a 7mm-08......Shoot the 7MM Mauser is 100 feet per second faster.....as a matter of fact, the 7mm-08 is the biggest underachiever of all the 7mm cartridges. If you are all wrapped up in moving the bolt 1/4 inch less, then go for it. For me. the 280 clearly shoots faster and faster means flatter and flatter means superior. If Jack O were still alive, he would trade in all his 270's for a 280 Rem in a flash. IMHO and regards, Rick.

BITE YOUR TONGUE.!!!! Jack would never turn on the 270..

Really though, Jim Carmicheal said that when he took over from O'Connor, the first thing Jack told him was to not get himself locked into supporting a single caliber over all others. Jack liked the 7X57 and the 375 H&H as well. However when he recommended anything other than the 270, people would yell traitor!!!!

I have a lot of hours in with the 270 and 280 both. If I had to pick one, the 280 would probably be it. However the 270 has earned its reputation on game around the world. Muchof itThanks of Old Jack.

7mm08 will do it for you and not much recoil but some.

The 280 is faster but I have yet to see a reloading manual list a 7x57 load thats faster. I could be wrong..but I havent seen it. Even with a slightly larger case...is it because of pressure or what?

Both are great cartridges but my vote would be for the 7 mm-08 because of less recoil and the short action. That would be my personal preference. As previously mentioned just flip a coin...
