Default 257 roberts

i'm considering something in .25 cal , and thought the old roberts might be an interesting toy to play with. i want something for pigs, goats etc.

my questions are two fold - 1) who chambers for this round ( i know ruger do in a timber M77, but not aware of any others ) and 2) i want some info from anyone who's had a bit of experience with this round.

i don't want a 257 weatherby, but would the 25-06 be a better bet?

My work buddy loaned his 257 Ruger to his wife for deer hunting. He never got it back.

Its a real Gem. I had one of the Ruger all weather rifles in that caliber. I also had a 700 Remington ADL Synthetic which was a special run in 2001. I also have a 25-06 in the Ruger and the 250-3000 in the Savage lever action and in the 700 Classic which was the classic run in 1974 I think. As you can tell, I like the 25 caliber. I once had a 257 Weatherby but in real life it was not much of a gain over the 25-06. most loads were only about 100 fps difference when you stayed within the pressure limits.

The best bet may be the 25-06 and if you want a little more zip, its a cheap conversion to go to the 25-06 Ackely Improved. Rosce has done these and comes up equal to the Weatherby with more availabe brass and such. The AI conversion will give you better brass life with little or no trimming and less barrel erosion than the Weatherby. I am thinking of doing this conversion on my Ruger as we speak. The 25 WSSM is another thought. Good luck. Caution... The quarter bores can be addictive.

My wife latched onto the 250 Remington classic for her deer rifle. It works great on our big bodied Mule deer. I load the 100 Grain Nosler Ballistic tip for her. The WW 100 grain Silver tips work great as well. Thats the old style Silver-tips.

The Roberts is a wonderful deer cartridge and the Ackley is even better. This is a true classic caliber and a joy to shoot. A 7X57 necked down to 25 caliber......totally awesome. Regards, Rick.

I took my 25-06 to the range yesterday and had a great outing with it. It's a great cartridge, with a flat trajectory and low recoil.

The .257 is regaining a little popularity, but it had faded enough that the .25-06 is probably found in a few more offerings.

I owned both calibers at one point and enjoyed them both. I favor the .25-06 over the 257 Roberts though. It is much easier to find ammo and it is usually a little cheaper. I shot deer with both and in my small unscientific sampling the .25-06 seemed to produce better results. Either way you won't go wrong.

A Tikka T-3 Lite in 25/06 would be a real keeper. I know cause I recently purchased one. Lots of ammo choices too.

Now James, if you could only have one .25 rifle, which would it be? (Promise you can keep them all, though!)

Hey would the Ackely 25-06 need the longer barrel like the 257wthby to really shine. Ive seen alot of Ackely stuff in books and on reloading dies but never really paid a whole lot of attention to what the big difference is other than the shoulder angle(I think). I just sold my 25-06 Encore barrel and need another 25 cal gun myself I was thinking about the 257wthby but didnt want the 26" barrel or the 25Wssm even the 257Roberts would be neatbut whats the biggest difference between a 25-06 and the Ackely version.
