RE: concealed carry
I've taken the course and paid my $144 to the state. Can anyone think of any other rights we have as law abiding citizens of the USA you have to pay be licened and pay $144 to use, or else be charged with a crime? Thereare very low chances where I live of ever having to even draw my gun in public or in a home invasion, but I felt the need to exercise my RKBA.
"The powers of the sword, say the minority of Pennsylvania, is in the hands of Congress. My friends and countrymen, it is not so, for the powers of the sword are in the hands of the yeomanry of America from sixteen to sixty. The militia of these free commonwealths, entitled and accustomed to their arms, when compared with any possible army, must be tremendous and irresistible. Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared then, that we shall turn our arms each man against his own bosom? Congress have no right to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birth-right of an American.... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or the state governments, but where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people."
- Pennsylvania Gazette, February 20, 1788
"No free government was ever founded or ever preserved its liberty, without uniting the characters of the citizen and soldier in those destined for the defense of the state.... Such are a well regulated militia, composed of the freeholders, citizen and husbandman, who take up arms to preserve their property, as individuals, and their rights as freemen."
- State Gazette (Charleston), September 8, 1788

A strong body makes a strong mind. As to the species of exercise, I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for
the body, and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion of your walks.

I live in Pennsylvania. I got mine many years ago, and it was and still is issued by our County Sherrif's office after a backround check. It is good for five years. Yes, of course I use it. My primary carry weapon is a .45 Colt/.410 SxS derringer. They're goin' down. Now.

RE: concealed carry
I will say in texas if you are travelin with you family, over 2 countys away from your home, or are carrying $200+ cash on your persons you dont need a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Well thats what our instructor told us NEway. PLUS now you can carry a weapon in your vehicle LEGALLY. kinda eliminates the permit for most of the place i go i am with family or have $200 on me, heck i carry atleast $100 in my car at all times "just in case" money
Your CHL intructor is about as wrong as he can be.
Law in Texas for many years was the "traveler defense", and this is what he is apparently talking about with the "2 countys/200 dollars/family" stuff. Dead wrong! The statue merely stated being a traveler was a defense to prosecution. There was no legal definition of who or what a traveler was, and not much in the way of statewide precedents or guides. You could, and in most jurisdictions WOULD be arrested and charged with illegally carrying a handgun.
Current law was passed with the legislative intent of clairifying traveling. Basicly says you are presumed to be a traveler if:
1. You are in a private motor vehicle
2. Not otherwise engaged in criminla activity, other than a class C misdemeanor that is a violation of a law or ordinance regulating traffic.
3. Not otherwise prohibited by law from posessing a firearm.
4. Not a member of a criminal street gang, as defined in 71.01
5. Not carrying a handgun in plain view.
Now the bad news. The DAs of several counties, such as Harris and Travis, have instructed the law enforcement agencies in those countiesto continue to arrest people carrying a handgun in their vehicles in this manner. I'm not looking to be the one who ends up in court as a test case to determine what the law actually says. I wouldn't advise anyone else to, either.
cost me $50 and 8hours on a saturday. As well as 48 well placed shots to teh head of my silhouette. would have been 50/50 but he told me if i used my pistol and someone died i would go to jail if they pulled my file and saw that i could hit what i was aiming at.... NEwho i wasted 2rounds to the dirt. then mail in i think it was $120 for the actual liceness. Where did you get yours for $20 =) please share myne is due up april 3rd.

RE: concealed carry
I've beencarrying for a couple of years now.At last check, I'm legal in 24 states with my VA and PA permits.
Some states have stricter criteria than others when it comes to issuing permits. In Virginia I was required to prove that I had handgun safety training (my hunter ed certificate satisfied that), submit my paperwork with $50, and wait about 45 days to receive the permit in the mail. For my nonresident PA permit I sent the paperwork with $20 to the Centre County Sheriff's Office and received my permit in about two weeks.
Packing.org is a tremendous resource for concealed carriers, and I recommend it and the 'Gun Talk' section to get as much information as you can regarding carry and the laws concerning it.

RE: concealed carry
Just like Aught Six, I have a CWP here in Virginia. I can carry my small Taurus 85, .38spl snubby if I want to.
But, 99.9999% of the time, I don't carry concealed. I got my permit in event I should have to and because the 2nd Amendment says I can carry. I used my USCG DD-214 and firearms qualification (M-16 rifle qual, 1911 .45ACP pistol qual) and easily got a CWP.

Shelby county, Alabama. Though Alabama does not issue to nonresidents.
If you want to get an out of state permit look at Florida. They issue to nonresidents and are reciprocated in more states than any other issueing state. It's valid for 5 years also.
God forbid if you have to use a gun to defend your or your famalies life and you actually hit what you are aiming at. Wouldn't that be a shame. I would think that you should score 50/50. Isn't the whole purpose of taking the training course to learn how to hit the attacker that you are aiming at and not innocent bystanders?
If common sense is so common why is it that more people don't have it? [:@]
