.260 Remington, but you may have a bit of a hard time finding a rifle in that price range in that caliber. There's only a few offering it and they can be a bit pricey. Otherwise I'd say the 7mm-08. You shoul be able to easily find a gun in your price range in that caliber.

me, I vote for the .30-06, good enough for most hunting. I like it..... and never noticed much recoil, even my .300 Win Mag has very little recoil, but I vote for the .30-06 if you are looking for all around! But it comes down to personal choice! [8D]

.25-06 would fit the bill. Shoots very flat and has plent of punch with little recoil.
But for $500 I think you may have a hard time putting a rig together, especially if you are planning on buying new. Plan on spending around $200 for a scope if you are planning on using a scoped rifle. Add in maybe $50 for the rings, and your down to $250 on the rifle. If you keep your eyes open at pawn shops and go to a gun show or two, you might find a good deal on a gun or scope. And remember, you can buy a combo only for the gun and the scope, keep one and sell the other. Sometimes you get lucky and the pawn shop doesn't know much about the scope.

While I'm a huge fan of the 260rem and while there's not to many game animals that I wouldn't feel under gunned hunting with one, the 308win is one of the best all round calibres available and there are plenty of choices in both rifles and ammo to choose from and the recoil is still very mild. I shoot both a 260rem and a 308win one handed off of a door frame while holding a spotlight with the other and they are both still pleasant to shoot.

I would go with a 7mm Rem. Mag. Good luck.

The original poster seemd to think the 30-06 was more than enough recoil for them. Why a 7mm rem mag? wouldn't that be the same or worse?

caliber is up to you....me i vote for the 30-06...but as far as the gun goes.....get a remington sps...they come with a limbsaver recoil pad and i have one in 300 win. mag. i swear to you it shoots like my wifes 243. get a 30-06 in that model gun ...which will run you around 400...i got mine for a little less, and with that type pad a 30-06 will be a ***** cat.
