7-08 vrs 270 win
The gloves are off give me your honest opinions. I shoot left handed and have decided to get a new rifle. Finally someone has come up with a left handed short action that isn't 10 pounds with a 26inch bull barrel. Anyways the Savage Weather warrior in 7-08, or the Ruger in 270 win. Primarily a deer rifle, maybe the odd moose, and black bear. All shots under 300 yards. All hand loads with different bullet weights for different species if I think it would warrant it. I am a Ruger fan have never seen the savage. Heard they shoot well, actually heard crappy actions great barrels, but that is rumour only. I cannot substanciate that statement, I am asking for advice. Seriously guys which would you prefer and why?

My preference between these 2 rifles would be the Ruger, I don't care for the Savage action, it's to sloppy and long. I actually prefer the 7mm-08 caliber, but prefer the Ruger rifle over the Savage. There are other lefties out there Remington, Sako. You might look at other rifles and see if you can find a combination of quality rifle and caliber choice that you like. Both of these cartridges are great for deer though a little light for moose.

I just bought the left hand Ruger 270 with the stainless barrel and laminated wood stock. I would recommend it to anyone. Very good shooting gun. The only thing I would change would be the trigger. Not quite an crisp as I would like.

If I had to pick one there would be no contest...Ruger. The reason I would pick it are simple design, field strippable bolt, controlled round feed, factory supplied scope rings ,great warranty and customer service versus good barrel, crap action , no floorplate, plastic magazine follower and a bolt that is complicated and not field strippable at all. Comparing synthetic stocks between the 2 there is no comparism even the Ruger synthetic is better and is probably the best non hand laid stock that comes on a production rifle. The trigger on it and the Savage both need work in some but not all cases but I feel the Ruger assembly is simpler and sturdier and certainly not made of powdered metal.

As for which rifle, I would choose the Savage. I had a Ruger once and it was a terrible specimen of a firearm. I am sure it was the exception and not the rule, but it left me with a bad impression of Ruger rifles. Savage actions are not crap. I have 3 of them and have never had any problems from any of them. As far as the cartridge choice, I prefer the 7mm-08 Rem, but I am fond of the 270 Win as well. Both are fine cartridges and are only marginally different in performance.
