Default Bought my FIRST one....

I've purchased my first rifle. After reading ALL the posts I could find... and listening to the discussions about round selection... and taking into consideration what my shots are going to most likely be where I will hunt... I selected and purchased a...

Winchester Model 94 - 30/30

WOHOOOO!!!!

HOWEVER - Oshman's has a sale on 30/30 150gr rounds for $6.99! Sooo.. I bought 5 boxes and promptly headed to the range to sight that bad boy in!!

KAPOW!! Dadgum thing kicks like a mule!! I've fired everything in the USMC arsenal [M16, 9mm, M60, etc.] but NOTHING kicked like that! Not that it's going to stop me - I was just HIGHLY suprised at the amount of recoil such a little gun could make.

I had a friend with me who almost fell off his seat laughing at my expression the first time I pulled the trigger. He's ex-army and has an SKS that he hunts with. So I handed it to him and let him fire a couple. THEN it was *MY* turn to laugh at his expression!! hehe...

Anyways.... I got about 3 inch groups on open iron sights at 100yds. The elevation was the easiest to adjust so it now shoots on level. The windage adjustment SUX!! I'm still about 2 inches left or I'm 2 inches right! ARRGH!!! I'm at the range again tomorrow morning to try and fix it.... THEN - if it's on target - Sunday morning looking for hogs. WOHOO!!!

Sowwy... just had to tell someone about my new gun that wouldn't mind hearing about it! hehe...

Stock design has a lot to do with felt recoil. Oddly enough, a .308 surely does kick more than a .30/30! In fact, a .308 kicks almost as much as a .30/'06, but not quite! Unfortunately, the M94 Winchester's stock design is perfect for making you feel every foot/pound of recoil, usually on your cheekbone!!

Keep yore powder dry!!

SOunds like you had fun!
After shooting for along time, you'll get scar tissue or something built up on your shoulder and you'll never notice the recoil much after that. The 94 I had did kick as much as my .308, but not nearly half as bad as my Yugo Mauser shooting surplus ammo. I shot about 1so rounds through my Yugo one day until finally I could take no more punishment. I ended up with a fat lip and the next day I had a bit of a black eye from all of the pounding I took.

Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms... who's bringing the chips?

Thanx guys!! It feels now like I'm a part of the crowd! Although a very inexperienced part - but a part nevertheless.

It was lightly raining here in Houston today and somewhat chilly. [ <72 degrees... hehe... Gotta LUV southern winters, eh? ] So I wore something will a little XTRA padding on the shoulder and went to the range with a small hammer and a wooden dowel.

Got the sights ON TARGET!! The groups are holding steady and I think a 3 - 4 inch group will be plenty accurate to take a hog. So I think I now have enough firepower on target for a clean hit.

I didn't get the cheek thump from the recoil. But it did make me VERY conscientous of exactly WHERE I was shouldering the butt of the rifle. I can see where people would be put off from weapons due to recoil 'specially if they didn't have it shouldered correctly.

It's been about 10 years since I last punched some paper and Whew!! DID IT FEEL GOOD!!! Now if I can just find a hog that wants to play!

On a side note... another friend of mine who's an ANTI NUT went to the range with me. He wanted to get an idea of what the DC a-hole was up against. I gave him about 10 minutes instruction how to hold, aim, breathe, and squeeze. He was hitting an area about 24' consistently. He came away with a better understanding that the shots this guy is taking are NOT that difficult.

AND... he also now wants to go hunting with me! hehe.. I had to tell him that we'd probably be just walking through the woods more than shooting at game until I learn what has to be done...

.....good choice on your first rifle!..... and, most of the reason you feel the recoil, is because of just what you stated..... the amount of recoil such a LITTLE gun could make.... that's why the leveractions are so popular... they are small, light, and handy.... all of which make the recoil more noticeable. If you shot a 308 out of a Winchester.... (like the 307 Winchester) I'm sure the recoil would be more painful than the 30-30.... given equal bullet weights.
Just as a suggestion... I'd try to use the 170gr bullets for hogs... unless they are smaller... 200-250lbs or so... hogs are TOUGH animals... very heavily muscled, and dense.... I saw one stop a 150gr bullet from a 30-06 at about 45 yards on a broadside quartering shot. NO exit at all.... this was about a 250lb hog... I'd use the "toughest" bullet I could find, and it should do a great job.
