My first deer rifle was an '06, then I moved to a .308 Ruger M77. Since purchasing it new in 1979, I have shot dozens of deer with it, and never lost a single one - most folded in their tracks. My favorite handload is 43 gr of 3031 behind a 150 gr spitzer. I have used a number of other powders with equal success.

after reading all these good posts, i had to register, and ask one of my own.First off ilive in north central Illinois. Orginally i had my mind made up on getting a savage in .243. I thought since im not going to use it alot, i would go witha round that was more expensive and faster than a .223. My uncle has a shooting range, and i have shot a lot of different calibers, and for some reason i dont really like the .223. I do however like the 6mm but, when it comes to availibility for ammo the .243 is easier to find than the 6mm. The only thing i would use it for, would be target shooting and shooting coyotes.i have a lot of property to hunt, and there is tonsof yotes out here.After this post i think i will get a .308, because i plan on going big game hunting when i get out of college, and i think i will have fun shooting it at coyotes.At least if i get a .308 i will have something more than a varmit and deer round.If anyone has any comments let me know, you guys have a lot more exerience at this than i do. I'm young and don't have many guns at all. I give alot of respect to it. Some of my "I WILL own" list include: 30-30 .308 & 6.5X55(in a modern gun) and a 44 or 41mag rifle

I wouldnt trade my .308 for any other round on the market. I love my .308, during the gun season its on me 100% of the time. And I have8 other rifles I could carry.

JRR1016: I think you're on the right track. The .243 has killed many deer, but I feel they are limited on the top end by the bullets that are available for larger game. With the .308 you can use 100-125 gr bullets for 'yotes and go all the way up to 180 for deer, though the 150 and 165 are probably more popularfor whitetails. If you reload, you've got MANY choices, but even if you don't, you can get a good selection at a good gun store (we're not talking WallyWorld here).

Looking at all the various trade-offs involved in a deer/coyote rifles, I think the .243 and the .25-06 come about a close as you can get to striking an ideal compromise.
Actually, if you want to get a little exotic - I would choose a .240 Weatherby or a 6MM-284. You won't find ammo at Walmart for either of these calibers . . .
