RE: 3030 improved
Don't do it. All the Ackley Improved calibers need to have the headspace set so the action won't close on the "go" guage, but will close with a little effort on a virgin brass case. Your gun already has the headspace set to close on the "go" guage, as it should - but being a break action you can't set the barrel back a thread to shorten the headspace. Reaming it to an improved will cause incipient case head separations after only a reload or two, rendering the gun virtually worthless.

bowedark,
I'd have to agree with the other post, don't think it's worth it. I hand load, but have used two factory loads that perform well out of my Marlin 336, they are made by Federal and Winchester, the 125 grn hollow points, you might want to try them. I've taken a couple of whitetails over 100 yds with them with great results and I've taken250 + lbwild hogs within 20 yards and they perform flawlessly.

ActuallyI have had this rifle& scopefor more then 10 years.
I've worked on loads from 110G to a 165G using nozler ballistic tips and other bullet manufacturesand use factories loaded Remington 55g the little bullet with the plastic sabo. Seenimprovementwithpointed tipbullets.
I do have another 30 30 & guns several other calibers.
Mymy thoughts were of just trying to improve it some?

but being a break action you can't set the barrel back a thread to shorten the headspace.
On factory loads in the imp chamber, they will be very low pressure because of the bigger chamber/smaller case, and there won't be any problems with "first time" fireings. (read new ammo)
As for reloading, you just reload them as you SHOULD, and set the head space on the "new" shoulder, so still no problem!
I've done this many times in break open actions and it works perfectly...

Looky here
Click on rifle cartridges, then 30-30, then compare the LEVERevolution cartridge to the 150 and 170 grain round and flat nosed loads. These are specially made to get better performance out of a 30-30 levergun, the ballistics are very impressive for a 30-30.
