243, 243 wssm, 25 wssm ??
Looking for some feedback on the mentioned cartridges. I put a thread on the reloader forum about 85gn TSX load data for the 243 wssm, but have not purchased the rifle as of yet. I have spent some time on the forum and internet trying to learn as much as posible to assist in making a decission. My plans are to use the rifle for mainly whitetail, but will also use the rifle for varmits, coyote now and then. I don't know much about the wssm cartridges, but they are intreging. My un-educated guess would be the 243 wssm because it's the middle of the road. Would like some advise as to the wssm's, or the standard 243 win. I hunt mainly in PA.....

If whitetail is your main objective,I would go with the 25wssm instead.I prefer the .257" bullets for whitetails, especially our large bodied 300lb+ bucks.

As much as the WSSM rounds sound interesting, there seems to be a fair bit of negative reviews about how poorly they feed. Comments like "you need to shoot factory or load to the exact same OAL lengths" kinda scare me. I wouldn't want to fight with a rifle. Would probably buy a .25-06 or a 6mm rem and never look back.

Not all but a good number of WSSM's that we sight in for folks get very poor group sizes when compared to the standard cartridges. About baseball size groups seems to be the norm. IMHO the WSSM line of cartridges are about as worthless as they come. Short fat cartridges are great as we see with the WSM's but as with everything there comes a point of diminished returns and IMHO the WSSM's have crossed the point of good performance and stepped right into the bad side of things.
Me personally I would pick up the standard .243 Winchester and commence to killing deer.

Im with Terry , the wssm's have not done very well , problems feeding due to the strange angles , and other problems . Id stick with a 243 or if your a reloader , a 257 roberts .

RE: 243, 243 wssm, 25 wssm ??
I've shot a 243 win all my life with no complaints. I recently bought a 243wssm in Mod 70 win. I've had constant feed problems.
I'm not complaining about the cartrige itself except I do think it does "too much damage" I've shot 4 with it so far and it seems to me to waste too much meat. It will kill em dead, but man!
I'm probably go back to 243 win. Plus too the availability of ammo although Winchester just released reload data on their website.BTW I'm shooting factory 100 power pts.
Hope this helps
Brad
Also I've not had the accurency probs mention before but to be fair I dont shoot any match type stuff.
The 4 i've shot and killed ranged from 340 yds to 155 yds to 125 yds

why is it the production bolts in wssm's have accuracy prblems but about all the AR's in them shoot bug hole groups? i REALLY LIKE THE 25 WSSM, MINES AN ar-15 BUILY BY dTECH AND IT SHOT 3/8'S DURING BREAKIN. The 25 is perfect for deer sized game with the velocity it shoots the nosler BT's. I've taked 8 deer with mine and everyone was a pass-thru.
But really in a bolt action you'd do just as well or better with a 25-06 or a 257 roberts AI. in the AR's are where the wssm's really shine

RE: 243, 243 wssm, 25 wssm ??
I've shot the 25 wssm and enjoyed it. It is a little finickier about feeding, but not bad. My main problem with it right now is the lack of selection regarding factory ammo. The pickings are too slim right now for me.
For whitetails and varmints, just a regular 25-06 is great. It will handle 110-120 grain bullets well for whitetails, and it can also be used with 75 and 87 grain bullets for varmints. The 25-06 will do everything the 25 will do, only ammo selection is far superior.

Duck the only ones I've so far are the Win 100 grPower Points.
I really belive the ammo selection is not the problem but the cartrige design itself.
It just don't feed right
