Default RE: Which is better?

I've never hunted with shotgun slugs, but my Dad has killed a bunch of deer with 20 guage slugs before switching to muzzleloading. He always used a Remington Wingmaster made in the late '60's with a 28" fixed full choke barrel, and would regularly make shots out to 75 yards with Remington Slugger rifled slugs.

I've heard improved is better for slugs, but I've never seen shooting data to support this (which doesn't mean it doesn't exist).

If you have a full choke tube/barrel, I'd just try grouping it to see if the accuracy met with your expectations. If not, switch to inproved and see if accuracy improves.

Just to expand on Driftrider`s post, it is true you safely run a rifled slug thru any choke, but best accuracy can be expected thru improved cyl., all your factory smooth bore slug barrels are improved cyl. You can expect a 3 to 5 inch group out to 100 yards.

Using Foster or Brenneke slugs, these shoot best from a bore which is as close to slug diameter as possible, and which deform the slug the least as it passes through the bore. The reason the old-type Ithaca smoothbore Deerslayer barrels were so accurate is that they were made the size of the slug, (.687=.690 dia, for the 12-ga.) and had no choke at all.

Its been awile since I shot slugs but I do remember my mossberg grouping the best with a modified tube. If your gun does have tubes get a rifled tube they do make a difference.

If you are forced to use a slug gun where you hunt, think about getting a rifled barrel and shooting sabot slugs. I have a Hastings replacment barrel on a Rem. 1100 semi-auto. It wears a 2.5 power scope and I get 2 3/4 in. 3 shot groups at 100 yds. With Federal sabots.
