I don't know about the prices in your areas but at the local Walmart where I live you can get the Savage package CHEAPER than the 710 package knowing this why would you buy the Rem 710 ( these are everyday prices )

JagMagMan, I had the same problems with my 597. Remington came out with a new mag and mine has functioned flawlessly since I bought the new ones. The newer version has a circle around the '10' on the magazine. If you've still got it, find some of those and give them a try.

DannyD, I looked at the Savage package gun when I bought my 710. I was about the same price, but didn't have the detachable magazine and I didn't like the squared-off forearm of the 110. The 710's rounded forearm felt better and I went with it.

Bigiron, is that oppossed to an expensive scope on the Savage? Just how much does one have to spend to not get a cheap scope? And you're right, my cheap Bushnell scope does just fine. I'm not an "all-weather" hunter, so the more expensive optics would not be a wise expenditure at this time.

XD, I've noticed that if I don't fully load the mag, it doesn't jamb as much! There are at least 4 or 5 better .22's for about the same money or less! The 710, and 597 didn't do much for Remingtons reputation!
I still bring the 597 to the range with me. I put a few rounds through it while I'm waiting on my other barrels to cool, but I would not recommend either of these two Remmies to anyone!

the scope and rings were so cheap on my first Savage 110 package I got, that within 2 boxes of bullets in my 7remmag I BENT the bolts that run through the rings!! I now know not to buy the packages just buy the bare gun.
