I have used a 243 win for a long time and have never had a problem with it not being enough gun for deer or antelope . I use the 85 grain Barnes X bullets for just about everything . I have never had to shoot one twice with this round . What ever you get just be sure to learn where ,when and how to shoot accurately and they will all work on deer .

The .243 Win will work fine, but the .257 Roberts and the 6.5x55mm Swedish will work better. So will the .260 Rem and the 7mm/08 Rem. Ditto the 7x57mm Mauser. All have mild recoil and will be better "grown up" rounds when his hunting adventures begin to expand.

Consider the Ruger Ultralight in .257 Roberts or the Ruger Standard in 6.5x55mm Swedish.

Or the Browning A-Bolt Micro in 7mm/08.

Or the Remington Model 7 Youth in .260 Rem or the Model 7 in 7mm/08.

Or the Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 6.5x55mm Swedish or 7mm/08, as well as the Winchester Model 70 Classic Compact in 7mm/08.

Another excellent consideration would be any of the above chambered for 7x57mm Mauser.

My 12 year old son shoots a model 700 youth in 243 and trust me it works.i load 87 grain hornady spire points and they work. i also sometimes will shoot 70 gr. balistic tips and they work.
you don't need a howitzer to kill a deer just good marksmanship skills.

if you shots are under 100yd get him another caliber with the closest or simular kick to the 243win.
260rem with a 140gr. being the highest and the 120 or 125gr bullets.

if you are under 100 yards, a .243 will be fine. dead is dead, if he can shoot, the deer will be just as dead from a .243 or a 30-06. i could see using something else if the range was greater, but under 100 a .243 will kill 'em no matter what bullet you use.

The .243 ballistically is in the same class as the .30-30 but shoots flatter. Both will take deer out to 200 yards or so pretty reliably, however, the .30-30 has a higher trajectory so it usually isn't employed much beyond 150 yards. Both work well for youngsters and have for generations. A competent shot is not handicapped by either load.

Loads based on the 7mm Mauser case are also quite benign for new shooters, however, the case length is intermediate between a medium length and standard length action so the Mauser is usually too long for a medium action and not long enough for a standard action. Consequently, loads based on the .308 Winchester or .30-06 cases have tended to be more popular, at least in America.

This is the reason you're likely to see more .243s than 6mm or .257s. The .243 is also comparable in most respects to the .250 Savage which is another load that has often been recommended for youngsters.

Whatever's wrong ain't the bow and whatever's right is the archer.

"The .243 ballistically is in the same class as the .30-30 but shoots flatter." I beg to differ, but the 30-30 Win is in a lower class ballistically than the 243 Win no matter how you slice it. The 30-30 Win loses energy much faster than the 243 Win. The 243 still carries 1332 ft/lbs at 200 yards while the 30-30 only has 858 ft/lbs.
