870 gunsmith help
A buddy had his 870 hot blued and the guy who done it for some reason redone the brazing on the barrel band that mounts to the mag tube. I know this becuse they used to be a small gold line around the band and now its bigger and there is a small drip area thats not noticeable because its under the barrel. I dont think it is solder because its gold and really hard because the small drip wont scrape off.
My question is why did he do this, and is this brazing or solder, and also why would he do this because hot blueing shouldn't take the barrel band off in the first place?
Also would this bother wondering about the durability of the barrel clamp coming off even though we fired around 200 rounds since the refinish?[/align]

RE: 870 gunsmith help
There should have been no reason for him to rebraze the barrel lug back to the barrel.
He would have had to completely remove all of the blueing and bead blast the barrel and then repolish it if that was the desired finish. This can sometimes make the brazing line look larger than it looked before.
Honestly it is hard to say with out actually seeingthe barrel.
Why not just ask him what he did and if it is something that you have questions about ask him why he had to do it.

Remington uses silver solder for this application - as well as for attaching the bolt handle on their 700 series rifles. No way should the barrel band have been re-soldered as part of bluing job. Maybe you are seeing thingsfrom the original factory attachment that wasn't visible before it was bead blasted?
