Default Back into Hunting - Need new Rifle 30-06, 270 or 308

Hi All...

I am getting back into hunting this year after 7 years... Please be kind..But at least I'm back!

I am looking for a new gun as my old 30-30 has been good but look for a little more punch. So...

I am looking at the Remington 7600 Pump but what your input on the size to get. I have never been one to "learn" the size scale and what is over what. I have only ever had 1 shotgun and one Rifle.

I will be hunting in different terain - thick - open- short shots and long shots...

What would YOU suggest for a size? 30-06 - 270 - 308??

Thanks all!

Welcome Back!

I prefer the .270 over the .30-06, which both have the same case necked down, but you have more choices in ammo with the.30-06 if that's a concern with you. When I use the .270 I shoot 130gr and some times 150gr. I also like the .308, but I also shoot a 6.5mmSwede which has the same case as the .308 necked down.

7mm-08,7mmx57 or 7mm Mag?The 7mm-08 is a .308 necked down.

Thanks for the input all. But I the Rem 7600 is limited to the 30-06, 270 and 308. I need to stay around $500 for this gun or the wife will put an end to it...

Thanks

If you're only going to be hunting deer, draw one out of a hat. If you think you'll ever hunt Elk or moose, the '06 will give you a slight advantage. If you shoot as a hobby, you might want to go with the .308 due to the availability of military surplus ammo.

I have the 270 and 280, both remington 700 models, bolt actions, been happy with both of them for years and they are in your price range.
