Assuming you want to salvage the hide, does that change the opinions? Seems like a .243 would be too damaging to save the pelt.

I was thinking of buying the weatherby vanguard in 30.06 because i want to use it for big game and i am on a tight budget. then i was thinking of puting a caliber reducer so i could shoot 7.62x39 which is really cheap, i think that is pretty close to the 223. what do u guys think. by the way which scope would you guys recommend for shooting coyotes out at 300 yards.

My favorite is a Remington VLS in 6mm Remington. Flat, fast and very accurate.

The 7.62x39 is way bigger than the .223 which is only 5.56mm as opposed to 7.62mm. I would just shoot accelerators out of the '06. Its a 55 grain sabot that screams at over 4,000 fps.

As far as a scopegoes you will want a good adjustable scope in the 4-12 or 4.5-16x range. You will be thankful for the magnification at 300 yards.

I was'nt sure of the .17cal untill last week-end. After 300 rds at different targets as 2liters filled with water @ 75yds and thick phone books backed by 1"boards, I know they will kill any varmits.
I was shooting CCI poly tips and they were super atany target I selected.The2liters had the caps screwed on and the energy transfer blew them right off and split the 2 litersinhalf. The Savage was also superb on tight groups.

I'm only repeating what I've heard here: The .17 Rem, and the new .204 are both supposed to be some sweet varmint cartriges.

BTW, I went with the NEF survivor in .223. Budget was my main concern. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten to use it yet. Permission to hunt in my area uis scarce, and the nearest state land has a rule against varmint hunting.[:@]
