270 question
I plan to buy a 270 winchester { Walmart} for long range shooting. Here asre my questions.
1, The range I shoot at is only 50 yds. Will there be a big change if I shoot at a target at 400 yds.
2. What would be the best bullet to buy if I'm jus thunting white tails?
Thanks.
Chuck

RE: 270 question
You have a fine rifle there. You might need to try a few brands and bullet weights to fine tune it but a good 130 grain bullet is great for all around deer hunting. If you reload there are many options. For factory stuff I like the Federal ammo loaded with Nosler Partition bullets also If they shoot good for you then the Walmart Remington Corlokts should work good as well. Good luck hunting.

RE: 270 question
Chuck - I would be a little hesitant to shoot at 400 yards if I had only ever shot the gun on paper at 50 yards. However, here is how a 50 yard "zero" shakes out if your scope is 1.6" above the bore (center to center) with a 130 grain Core Lokt:
50 yards 1" high
100 yds 3" high
200 yards 4" high
300yards -0-
400 yards 10" low
This could vary a little, but probably not enough to cause a miss on a deer out to 400 yards. Good luck to you. Roskoe.

RE: 270 question
Practice shooting your rifle at 50 yards if that is the longest range you can find. If you want to try shooting a whitetail at 400 yards I have a suggestion for you. Take a piece of cardboard and make a cardboard deer and set it up in a field. Now, pace off 400 yards and turn around and take a look at it. NOW, pick up your gun and check it out in the scope. I think you will rule out the 400 yard shot.

RE: 270 question
OK Tha tmakes since. 400 yds is nearly a 1/4 mile. What then would be a reasonable long shot for a white tail and would a 270 be the best gun to use.
Also thanks ALL for the imformation. I only have a 30-30 now and wanted something for long range. I pulled up somesites, and most said the 270 is a real good choice. I know in the mlitary I did very well on the 300 meter range with an open sight M16. However the vital target of a white tail would be rather small at 400 yds.LOL

RE: 270 question
400 yards is a long shot, but not a "Hail Mary" for a skilled rifleman. The real trick, IMO, is knowing that what you think is 400 isn't really 350 - or 450. Laser rangefinders are almost a must for long shots under field conditions.
The .270 is one of the better long range deer cartridges. The 257 Weatherby and the 7 STW have a little better trajectory - couple of inches flatter at 400. A streamlined bullet might flatten it out a little more. Any of them will work at this distance from a good rest and, if you know the exact distance, you can hold for what little drop there is.
