RE: Savage or Remington 30-06?
Ditto on the Savage. Accurate out of the box and the new accutrigger corrects the old Savage trigger complaints. I shoot a .243 Model 111 that I had the trigger worked on for p-dogs out to 400 yds (average 300-350 yds) with 58gr Hornady V-Max and H380...just splatters 'em. Sweet shooter! For the price, go with the Savage and don't look back.

O.K. I'll be the "other guy." I happen to own a 710 in .30-06. I'll tell you right now that it shoots just fine. My groups are as tight as the next guys with a rifle that costs five times as much. I've put a little over 500 rounds through it and not had one problem. I've disassembled and reassembled it many, many times with no problems. Thebolt is just fine also. It does FEEL light, but has operated flawlessly. Now, having said that, the only complaint I have is the lack of replacement stocks. The stock is fine, except for the color. I would like to get a cammo stock just to spruce her up a little, but none are available. Maybe in a little while.
The Savage is a great gun also. I have no problems with the Savage at all. I'm just saying that I think the bad press with the 710 might be unwarranted. I'm DEFINATELY NOT here to start an arguement with anyone. However, I've been involved in many of these discussions on several firearms forums over the last two years. The first thing you will notice is how often the phrase "I heard" is used when talking about the problems of the 710. I have yet to meet someone who actually owned one say anything bad about it. The day I bought mine, there were two Savage 110's on the wall with broken bolts. I would be remiss to form my opinion of Savage Arms based on that observation alone. I could be wrong. I am open to the idea that maybe I got lucky with the one I got. My friend got one also and loves it. Maybe he got lucky too. The key is to remember the phrase "for the money." I think both the Savage and the Remington are excellent rifles "for the money." I would suggest that, if possible, one would borrow or rent both rifles and see which one they are more comfortable with before making a decision.
Then again, I'm all alone on this. So, I could be totally wrong.

I'm with elgallo114. I also have a 710 in .30-06 which I bought last year. It has performed flawlessly at the range and in the field and accuracy is fine, well below 2" @ 100 yards. I might get to hunt a dozen times during the deer season, so I considered it to be a waste of money to spend $500+ on a rifle & scope. At the time I bought my 710, I also looked at the Savage package gun (think it was a 110). The 710 won out because I liked having the detachable magazine and I liked the rounded stock of the 710 compared to the stock of the Savage, which had a stock that was more squared-off and box-like.

bigguns, I finally found it. Here is how the receiver differs.
"Additionally, the fiberglass-reinforced nylon receiver insert is blended with TeflonĀ® and silicon before molding for continual self-lubrication and ultimately smooth operation"
I checked the Remington website and could find no info on if they changed this. Also, it continues to be second only to the 700 BDL in terms of sales.
