Default anything heavier

7.62x39 umc......... 123 grains metal case
rem exp ...125grains pointed soft point

Is that all the factory ammo there is for this caliber??

Is 7.62x39 a 30 cal? Somewhere between a .243 and 30.06 or am I wrong here.. Ive been thinking about using a norinko sks 5 round clip for deer...one or two days this season. Will 123 or 125 grains do the job..along with good shot placement ..of course One more ....is there a minimum specified grain weight for deer by law??

Whatever you can do with 30-30 you can do with 7.62x39 (out of a sporting rifle.)

No! There's just scads of 7.62X39mm ammo out there! The Wolf brand (Russian) stuff is even loaded these days with a 150 (or 154)-grain softpoint bullet quite useful for deer hunting! I think Sportsman's Guide has it!

The 7.62X39mm has a "nominal" groove diameter of .310", and actual bore diameters can range from .308" up to .314" or even more depending on which country made the gun! This makes it more of a ".303" that a .30, but I use .308" bullets in my CZ 527 carbine that has a .311" groove, and they shoot very well, thank you!

A 123-125-grain SOFTPOINT (or other expanding bullet) will work quite well on deer, as well as any .30/30 or .32 Win. Special ever did! Good hunting!
