RE: 7.62x39
It sure can be. If you use the right bullets, the 7.62X39 can beat the .30/30 factory loads. I have two of them, an SKS and a CZ 527 carbine. Both of these rifles will fire a 150-grain Sierra spitzer .308" bulletat 2300 FPS using a max load of H335 powder, and they will both break 2000 FPS using the Speer .311" roundnose 180-grain bullet again with a load of H335 powder. In addition, both of these loads are accurate, of course they shoot better from the CZ than from the SKS!
If you are forced to use factory ammo, try the recently introduced Wolf brand in the 150-grain softpoint load. I think Sportsman's Guide has this ammo, and I would use a 150 grain bullet in preference over the 123-grain stuff. JUST DON"T use any FMJ ammo!
The CZ carbine is very accurate, even with .308" bullets, as you can see. The upper three-shot group was with Winchester FMJ 123-grain ammo, not suitable for hunting. But the Sierra 150's would do in any deer!

i also own a sks and a charles daly bolt action in 7.62x39, it's amazing how accurate the round is in a good bolt action. but for the sks i've had good luck with it. i get 4-5in groups @ 100yds. used alot of the 125gr win. softpoints. shoot pretty good. also try the 150gr corbon.
i haven;t had the chance to try the 154gr wolf softpoints. i bought 2 cases of the hp ammo so i gotta dwindle that down a bit.
but in a nutshell. if you use a good softpoint and shoot straight, yes the 7.62x39 is a great hunting rifle.

I would imagine that it would be OK for hunting. I know that there are better choices for hunting than FMJ ammo, but I have never hada problem with it. I was stuck on a hunting trip where our ammo had been misplaced, and we had brought 2 boxes of American Eagle? (I think) FMJ ammo for the 30-06. It killed deer just as dead as the soft points. You usually don't get the drop dead kind of kills you can get with soft points, but a deer with a hole through both lungs ain't going far!
