Sierra GameKing BTSP on Elk
So, i went to the rage today and shot a box of federal premium sierra gameking BTSP in 165 and a box of federal premium Nosler Partitions in 180. i was hoping the partitions would be the better shooters but they were not. i got much tighter groups with the gamekings. does anyone have any experience with the gamekings on elk? i was just looking at the federal web site and they recomend the 165 gamekings for "Medium game". i am sure they will be fine for elk but was wanting to hear anyones first hand experience. thanks

RE: Sierra GameKing BTSP on Elk
I would not consider elk medium game and would not use the 165gr btsp for elk myself.I would either use a premium 165gr bullet or go to a 180gr conventional bullet. In the latest shooting times bullet tests(as well as other recent tests)sierra bullets consistantly offered the least penetration of all bullets. On an animal the size of an elk penetration is much more important than on smaller game such as deer.

RE: Sierra GameKing BTSP on Elk
My uncle has taken several elk with game kings in the 180 gr. from his 30-06, but none of them went all the way through. Those bullets just don't hold together worth beans. That said, I would recommend trying a different load too, like Stubblejumper said. I've seen them work, but I was not impressed by the bullet when we recovered them. Will they work, yes, BUT, there are better choices. Also, non of the elk that my uncle shot were over 250 yrds., so longer range shots, they may not work as well.
