get ya a 4 inch barreled S&W in 41 rem mag. 41 rem mag can come in pretty light carry friendly revolver and has more punch then a 357 mag and almost the punch of a 44 rem mag. good luck

After reading everyones post, and talking to a few other people. I am now leaning towards the 44 Mag if I can find a relatively lite one. I don't want a big pistol that is heavy and bulky. Should I go for a single or double action? What would be the ideal barrel length for what I will be doing?
thanks

deffinately a double action, in a few second pinch from a charging animal IMO a single action just isnt fast enough. edit: a 4 to 6 inch barrel would be ideal id lean more towards a 4 inch barrel IMO a bit more practical for what you want

RE: What caliber for defense in the field
iono i would probally pick my 45 colt single with a 7.5 inch barrel with bullets reloaded up to 300gr and it is jsut as good as a 357mag, but i feel most comfortable with that gun then my dads 44mag(8.25 in barrel)< if i were you i would pick the gun you wuld feel most comfortable with b/c you would have more confidence with that gun than ne other gun tahn if you got a gun you weren't quite sure about!!! but for me and my 45 i would have enough confidencce in that gun that i could shot an elk with it at about 15yrds away. or have to shot a bear if i am being charged by one, but that is to show how much confidence i have in a gun that was given to me when i was about 11yrs old. from my dad that got it from my unlce(the gun was given up from my unlce b/c i belive he got a 454 casul) in the mid 80's or later.
