Default 338 ultra mag

What do you guys think?

At the shop we have a gently used Remington 338 ultra mag stainless BDL in an HS Precision stock with Leupold rings and bases on it. Being in Alabama no one wants to buy it. It has been sitting there for quite a long time so the owner will let me have it for what he has in it, which is about $550, just to get rid of it.

Should I put this gun away and pay on it? I'd really like to have a 338 of some configuration and my birthday is coming up on the 10th of July. I really don't need to spend that much money but I'm thinking this just might be too good to pass up.

Talk me out of it.[8D]

Sounds good for those varmints in your picture. Don't know how big your game gets in Alabama, though.

Ok, if you insist What in the world you gonna' hunt in Alabama with a 338RUM?
Now, if you really want something big, and want to get your shoulder pounded, look around and find a good 375H&H. Much more versatile.
If you insist on a 338 magnum of some persuasion, I'd look to a plain old 338Win.Mag.
Better yet, find a good used rifle in something, say like a 30-06, and rebarrel it to
338-06. From purchase, to rebarrel, to bedding, to tinkering, etc., you'll have a birthday
present that keeps on giving!

BTW, a little early, but

The 338 would be for the trips back out to Colorado and hopefully other larger game in the future. Not that the rifles that I already have wouldn't do just as good a job as they have been doing. I just don't have a "medium bore" cartridge yet and I hate belted cases unless they are needed, such as on H&H cases.

It DEFINETLY wouldn't be an "Alabama" deer rifle. Although I could kill and gut a deer at the same time. Save me from getting bloody.

Actually I have deeply considered making myself a 338 Lapua but the cost of ammo is nearly a hundred bucks a box. The ultra mags ballistics are pretty much the same but at less than half the cost for ammo.

Yes, I know I need to invest in reloading equipment.[&:]

When a beat up ole standard length rifle comes in the shop I'm gonna snatch it up and turn it into a 35 Whelen. Been wanting one of them for a long time too.

BTW, thanks for the early

Yes, Happy Birthday.

I seem to have more and more of those each year when I buy myself something nice.

Surely I'm like 200 years old by now, counting guns and, ummm, other things.

I can't talk you out of a .338 UM. It's just a pure cannon and if you want it, who cares what it's for?

I don't know what a ranking system would be of guns to kill elk/moose, but a 338 RUM would have to be as good as ANYTHING. You get a big wound channel, you get fantastic ballistics with 200 grain (and bigger) bullets.

Heh, heh, heh....

Turn back now while you still can.....
The dark side of the force is growing stronger with you Anaken, er I mean bigbulls!
Once you experience the difference on elk, there will be no turning back until you get old.

Hey EKM. I figured you'd show up on this one.

Glad to see you're still hanging around a bit.

I would have no use for it but it sounds like a good enough deal if you have use for it.. Happy Birthday.

I think that you will like the 338 RUM.
It is one heck of a Elk gun.

At least I like the one that I use. I use the 225 gr. Accubonds, and get a true .75 group at 100 yards.

Good luck.
