30-30 question Model 94
I havn't looked at 30-30 rifles for a long time but I was in Walmart yesterday and I saw a model 94 30-30. The price was about 275.00. Is there more than one grade or class of model 94 these days? I thought that seemed pretty cheap. I have had several 94's but not for several years.

They had a Marlin also. It was about the same price. Both were under 300.00. What is the difference in the different 94 Models? Is it just the wood or is the reciever different also. The Marlin had some pretty cheap looking wood on iy. The 94 had a bit better lookink stock. I know the Marlin used to make a cheaper model and then the 336. I didn't have the guy take them out for me for a closer look but I will next time I go over there. I have always prefered the Marlin for function and accuracy. I need to get a 30-30 barrel for one of my NEF rifles. I have no earthly idea of why I need a 30-30 again but it will come to me.
I quess mostly because I have almost always had one. A couple years ago I traded two 94's in on another rifle (that I probably don't have anymore) One was a 32 Special the other a 30-30.

barrels vs. round, Marble's tang sight setup, color case hardened receivers, walnut stocks vs. hardwood, etc. Some in different calibers too such as 44mag., 38-55.
Far as I know, action is basically the same for all the 30/30 models. For the money, I suspect you may have been looking at a "Ranger" model ? (blued with hardwood stock).
Marlin has several variations of the 336 as well. There's the 336Y, the "Spikehorn" (youth model) with short barrel, and shorter LOP. The 336SS with walnut stock and stainless steel action/barrel. The 336C with blued 20" barrel, walnut stock, and butt pad.
Then there's the 336W and 336A, both with walnut finished hardwood stocks.
All seem now to have checkering, hooded front sights, sling swivel studs. The "W", I think, comes with a sling, and the front swivel is on a barrel band. The "A" front swivel stud in mounted on a forend cap. They all have the same actions/safety. The differences mostly lie in wood and finish.
Personally, I'd take the less expensive model "A", maybe just install a butt pad on her, and mount a Weaver 1-3x scope on it. Get a "W" if you need a sling. Get a "C" if you insist on walnut stocks.
