I have a 7mm and love it, but I am very interested in the 300 wsm. Either way you might consider a wsm in either caliber. The 300 wby has a hell of kick so unless you just love the kick go with 7mm

If you can afford the Weatherby, I would choose the Weatherby
over the Remington. Have you compared the two?

As someone that has owned both weatherby and remington rifles,my experiences were that my weatherby rifles were no more accurate than my remingtons despite the extra cost.In fact most of my remingtons were more accurate than my weatherby rifles.

I was about to say the same thing Virginia7 said. If you already have a 30-06 go for a .338 Win mag.
I have a 300 Win Mag myself and I like it. It is a Ruger 77 with a trigger job. The only reason I have the 300 is that my next cartridge down is 7mm-08. If I had a 30-06 I wouldnt get a .30 cal mag.

In the vanguard I would choose the 300 Win Mag. The 300 Weatherby needs a 26" barrel to achieve the advantage it provides over the 300 Win Mag and a 26" barrel isn't available on the vanguard. The 300 Win Mag has more available ammo than the Weatherby at a lower cost. I mean you can walk into most Wal Marts and pick up a box of 300 Win Mag ammo and they don't even carry ammo for any Weatherby calibers. Also, you can buy cheap remington core-lokt or winchester power points to practice with for less than $20 a box and you can buy premium ammo for hunting purposes. There are also High Energy & Light Magnum loads available for the 300 Win that will come close to the Weatherby velocities. The Weatherby round also has more recoil than the Winchester round. You should be able to manage the Vanguard as it weight 7.75# sans scope and mounts. When you add a scope, mounts, sling, & ammo your rifle will weight 9#'s or a little more. This is a good weight for a magnum cartridge.
