In petersons latest magazine, they list (on page 66) in order of the amount of recoil from least to greatest recoil factor:
270 win 1.82
308 win 1.95
7MM rem mag 2.06
30-06 2.19
300 WSM 2.36
300 win mag 2.39
45.70 Gov 2.43
300 RUM 2.64
Now this isnt all of them, but I thought I would post it. These arent my numbers, they are that of Petersons hunting magazine. Seems pretty accureate to me. EJ

I wonder if this is just a calculation based on rifle weight and bullet weight/velocity? I would have expected the .300 Win Mag to have about 50% more recoil than the 30/06; and the .300 WSM to be about in between. Roskoe

I have read a lot of these tables including the Chuck Hawks tables. I have never seen the 30-06 listed with more recoil than the 7 Mag. Its possiable given light bullets in the 7 Mag and heavy ones in the 06 But its not normally the case.

Actually, It is based on the rifle weighing 8.5 pounds. I probably shouldnt have mentioned it since the calculations make my head spin, but I thought it was very interesting. Its kinda wierd, I am still fighting the re-coil flinch myself, and I can vouch that my pals 7 mag is a little easier on the shoulder than my 30-06 but his rifle is a bit heavier too.
I improved greatly when we played this little game, we sit with shooting stix and one guy will load and hand the rifle to the other guy (with the saftey on) and it might have a snap cap, or it might have a live round. then we shoot 100 yards at the target. It really tells the story. This is all at an approved range using utmost safety. EJ

I'm gonna have to pick up a copy of that issue. I have been in turmoil over whether to go with .30-06 or 7mm Rem Mag. If those comparisons are true, the 7mm will find a new home....

ejpaul1, what months issue is that?

just type in rifle recoil tables. you should get Chuck Hawks recoil tables. That shows them all.

zac76156, That would be the july 2005 issue. Ya know, the 30-06 is a bit more versatile, but if you already have another rifle, say a 243, the 7 mag is a better deer and elk gun in my opinion. I just got a remington 700 in 30-06 and I like it but wish I had a little more flat trajectory. Ammo is more with the 7mm and choices arent as good as the 30-06.
Its tough, I love them both but I can only afford one rifle and 30-06 seemed the good choice for me. Shoot em both, youll know then. EJ
