RE: Specks or Crappie??
The proper name is either White Crappie ,and then you also have the Black Crappie.Living in Maryland for 22 years I'm used to calling them crappie. However; when I'm communicating with Floridians I call them Specks. We mostly have Black Crappie here and much bigger than Maryland crappie.

They are mostly called White Perch down here, or Sac-A-Lait!
As Mez said, specks are Speckled Sea Trout where we are!
The other day I had to decide wether I was going White Perch fishing, or Speck fishing! You can do both on the Gulf Coast, but not at the same place!
